For your reference: at the Weekly, we’re not fans of animations that cross your computer screen and make some sort of noise. Just so you know.

The editor of the Tucson Weekly. I have no idea how I got here. More by Dan Gibson

While the obtrusive elf does get on my nerves TucsonWeekly.com is not always a model of virtue in this regard. Take, for example, the entire background of TucsonWeekly.com suddenly being a gigantic advertisement for Shrek the Musical. That was annoying and it lasted for days.
I want the interface of my news sites to be mundane, boring. Barring major site upgrades I want them to look and feel the same every single time I check in. Bizarre elves, ads that take up vertical space and then suddenly shrink (azstarnet.com, again), ads whose close button migrates, and full background advertisements all make my news reading more difficult.
Thanks for the continuing pop-under ads, though. Readers love those as well!
Zack/Dylan: Fair points, for certain, although I will say we’re actually trying to improve the reader’s experience all the time, and, as far as I’m concerned, backgrounds and pop-unders aren’t ideal, but at least they don’t prevent you from seeing what you came here for. For obvious reason, I understand that _most_ publications with presences online need to find a way to actually pay for that presences (if not make money), but there are certain types of advertising that cross a line.
