HEREFORD, ARIZ.—Glenn Spencer is the president and founder of the American Border Patrol. His organization, an immigration-watchdog group, has been in operation for seven years.
On the afternoon of Oct. 15, Spencer took a reporter and me on a tour of the border fence that runs along his property. This is the section that he patrols regularly.
Spencer and his organization have spent more than a million dollars of mostly donated funds to equip his ranch with monitoring devices that allow him to keep tabs on crossing activity. The equipment ranges from military-grade weapons to high-tech monitoring devices like thermal cameras, seismic sensors, experimental planes and recording devices.
Once his equipment picks up movement, Spencer records the data and uses it to inform the U.S. Border Patrol, he said.
During the tour, Spencer stopped at a section of the fence that has generated controversy: Thousands of small American flags are attached to the fence; each flag carries a message from supporters who demand that the federal government do more to curb illegal immigration.

Glenn Spencer is an America hero! Obama should have appointed Glenn Homeland security director. But of course BO always picks the worst people for the job.
Thank God for patriots like Glenn Spencer. As America goes to
hell a precious few try to hold back the night and just maybe
they will return our rapidly crumbling country to the majesty
it once had. Thanks Glenn for the effort.
I wish this had been expanded. It is the beginning of a rare article, coming from the Tucson Weekly, that does not ridicule or “bigotize” those who believe in honoring our border. Glenn Spencer and those who work with him are brave people.

Your hero and “patriot” is a mean, vile old man who associates with white supremacists and anti-Semites. He has, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, “attended conferences of American Renaissance magazine, which specializes in racial theories about blacks and others.” He has also published an article on his website titled “Is Jew-controlled Hollywood Brainwashing America?”
Spencer was also responsible fanning the anger that led to death threats being made against Cochise County government officials during the first Minuteman infestation of the border. The crazy old coot was forced to leave his Sierra Vista-area subdivision after he shot up his neighbor’s garage – an offense for which he was fined and placed on probation.
