Republican Sen. John McCain, facing a tough reelection challenge from U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-CD1), told voters last week that they should elect him to serve as a check against a Hillary Clinton administration. It appears that McCain is not anticipating a Trump triumph in November.

Over at Talking Points Memo, Lauren Fox notes that the strategy is a callback to 1996:

McCain’s appeal is identical to the one Republican senators made in 1996 when their nominee Bob Dole was floundering and it was growing increasingly clear that linking their futures to him was more of a suicide pact than it was helpful.

“Ann Kirkpatrick won’t oppose higher taxes, she won’t oppose more federal spending and she won’t impose increased debts that slow economic growth,” McCain said. “I will.”

“She won’t exercise her right to advise and consent on presidential appointments to make sure we don’t have the wrong people in important jobs or Supreme Court justices who will take the courts to liberal extremes,” McCain said. “I will.”

On the other hand, in the above interview flagged by Team Kirkpatrick, McCain says he can work better with Donald Trump than on Hillary Clinton when it comes to immigration, even though McCain doesn’t think Trump’s policy is at all realistic and McCain’s own immigration stance actually mirrors Hillary Clinton’s on the major points.

  1. Why would anyone vote for a person who vows to not do the job he is asking for? Obstructionism is not part of the job description of a senator. Don’t vote for McCain!

  2. “When a stupid man is doing something he is ashamed of, he always declares that it is his duty.”

  3. Whatever happened to the man once known as the Maverick Senator? Perhaps more than anything else, Arizona needs a senator who will rally enough senators to rebuild our infrastructure. Sounds like McCain has confirmed that he is not the that senator; a far cry from his gracious concession speech in 2008 in which he promised to cooperate and work together.

  4. Poor John McCain, a man I once admired, He is just saying and doing whatever it takes to get re-elected. Time to retire while you still have a sliver(however small) of decency left. Let me add that I am still interested in things in Arizona, as I lived there in the 1940’s .

  5. Sometimes it’s better not to do anything than destroy the economy of the country through OPEN BORDERS. It is illegal to give NON-Citizens Social Services – as a matter of fact they are to be deported if they are collecting. All the Green Cards or LPRs collecting Welfare of any kids are subject to Deportation.

Now the Democrats want to make 11,000,000 illegals legs to give then benefits OUT OF YOUR POCKET!
This is why the courts denied Obama his Giveaway program.

LAW: Under Section 212(a)(4) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), an individual seeking admission to the United States is inadmissible if the individual, “at the time of application for admission, is likely at ANY time to become a public charge.” “Field Guidance on Deportability and Inadmissibility on Public Charge Grounds,” 64 FR 28689 (May 26, 1999)

Democrats make Adjustments (POLICIES) to Giveaway Program by allowing NON Citizens US Tax dollars!

While immigrants in theory can be deported for becoming a “public charge,” it never happened under OBAMA ; in all of 2012 there was just one investigation of an immigrant under this provision, and it was dropped.  In figuring who is a “public charge,” only cash benefits are counted; so that an immigrant family living in public housing, receiving food stamps, free school lunch, and Medicaid is considered self-sufficient!

  6. McCain has the right idea when he describes the “checks and balances” role of the U.S. Congress. That’s exactly why we should be sure to elect a Democrat to the Senate. If McCain gets his wish Trump will be President and he surely will need to be checked and balanced!

  7. Isn’t this the genius that traded land worth billions in copper ore for some worthless land nearby, to benefit a foreign owned corporation? This should be reason enough to replace him with a woman who helped rip off America and the San Carlos Apaches…
