I’ve been quite excited about the opening of Taqueria el Pueblito. The information on Mercado San Agustin’s website has made it sound as if the place would sell some truly unique food, which it might at some point.
The menu I was handed during my visit this morning was no different than what one finds at any Mexican fast-food joint. The breakfast burrito and coffee I had ($3.99, drink included) were decent, but there was no indication anywhere that anything unique was going on. Such is the problem with high expectations. If I hadn’t read the claims on the website, I wouldn’t have expected anything out of the ordinary.
But, hey, they do sell nacho supremes and Pueblito super fries. And tacos, tostadas, taco salads and … do I need to go on?
Taqueria el Pueblito is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Call 339-9336 for more information.
In other Mercado San Agustin news, the barbecue grill is in place at Casa Marita Restaurante Argentino, which is expected to open early this year. The restaurant will specialize in Argentine-style barbecue, and from a peek inside the windows, is going to be a pretty swank affair.

Yes, you probably didn’t get to try the barbacoa and the adobada… steak is steak wherever you go, but when you talk about dishes like barbacoa and the adobada it’s all about the seasonings, the condiments, the flavors… Try the barbacoa grilled tacos and you will see that’s something you can’t find anywhere else in Tucson. Enjoy!
I have to say it was very delight and enjoyable experience dinning at Mercado San Agustin’s Place. My girlfriend and I really like the plates that Taqueria el Pueblito had to offer, los tacos dorados de barbacoa were amazing! Rodolfo the cook, recommended them and I can say I was very happy with his recommendation. We ended our lunch buying from El Estrella Bakery, great Mexican style pastries!
An important detail about this place is that the food is Jalisco-style. I went there today with my wife, who grew up in Jalisco and she thought the food was great (not an easy feat! I really liked it too but I’m much easier to please!) Burritos and the like are something you typically find in the border regions, and as such, I would venture to say that the specialties of a place like this would tend to be the selection of corn tortilla tacos, tostadas, the barbacoa…probably anything would have been better than the breakfast burrito! We tried several of the tacos, including the al pastor and the carnitas. The tacos were very tasty (better than any place I can think of in recent memory) and a good value since they are $2 apiece and good sized. We’re definitely going back to sample more from the menu!
