The new restaurant Apple Farm Bakery Diner in the old 5 and Diner building at 4520 N. Stone Ave. is open.
We tried contacting the owners of the Apple Farm Bakery Restaurant in Benson to get some more information on this restaurant, but never got a response. That restaurant is known for homemade American food done country-style, and seems to be a hit with most people who’ve tried it.
If anybody’s eaten at this new restaurant, feel free to let us know what you think in the comments section below.

My husband and I went there for lunch on Tuesday… We will never go back. The service was slow, the waitress was surly there were flies buzzing around. and the food… YUCK. I ordered their breakfast slam.. the sausage was more filler than pork, the bacon was the cheapest possible kind available. the pancakes obviously came from a mix, they were tasteless and gummy, I ordered my eggs over easy.. they got that right.. but they were dripping in grease. My husband ordered their Monte Cristo sandwich.. NOT the way I was taught they were supposed to be made. He’s not a picky eater, but he didn’t finish his sandwich. the fries were obviously frozen crinkle cuts. I sure miss th 5 and Diner.. they made awesome ruebens.
Well… that’s a hell of a way to start… I’m feeling ill just reading about it.
Well….where do I start? We went for lunch today (Sunday) around noon time. As we approached the diner, two waitresses were outside hanging balloons. One waitress saw we were heading toward the door, she walked in right before us (no hello…no nothing) and didn’t even have the decency to hold the door open for us…just let it close in my face. Strike one….We sat down and the same waitress was raving about the corn beef hash so my husband ordered that with eggs. They got the eggs right…the corn beef hash (that I tasted as well, was fried mush with no taste. I had a simple grilled ham and cheese and requested it on wheat and got “we ran out of wheat bread”….had to laugh as they have “BAKERY” in their restaurant name but they ran out of wheat bread (it’s not like we showed up at 8 PM or anything…it was NOON)…the fries tasted like they had been freezer burned or cooked in dirty oil and the coleslaw was also tasteless in a mushy watery substance. One other waitress had sores on her hands but was still waiting on tables. The word “DINER” to us means “breakfast at any time of the day and coffee refills without question” – the waitress walked by, noticed the empty cup at the end of the table and walked right by. Had to ask for a coffee refill which they charge for every cup (who does this??) We used to frequent the 5 and Diner…always greeted with a smile and the waitresses were AWESOME and attentive. We will probably not go back to this place.
On Friday, 10/9 we tried this place around 6 pm. Ditto to all the comments above plus our breakfasts were cold. There were unsanitary practices in use, where the bus person cleaned the seats and tables with the same damp rag and the unused setups were left on the table through the process for the next customer. A solo young man in a wheelchair couldn’t get his drink right and asked the manager to comp it, so she told him that the meal was on her, she didn’t like customers that “played these games”, and never to come back (he left the money for the tab on the table.) We will take her advice.
I took my family to eat here on 10/7/2011. The waitress was in a hurry to end her shift so gave very rushed service , she never asked how our food was and acted annoyed when asked about the desert that was supposed to be included with the meal. The side dishes were ok at best , my son had a chiliburger which he seemed to like, however the pork chops and steak were very dissapointing. My steak was brought to me well done when I asked for it to be medium and the pork chops were very dry. When I said something to the manager I was offered an insulting $2.00 off my bill. There was no offer to remake the food and no apology at all. I would avoid this place at all costs. Save yourself some money and go eat at an elementary school cafeteria it will be cheaper , have better service and taste better.
Unfortunately, I have to agree with the previous posters. Service was slow and shoddy. The food was mediocre. The soup was cold and the rest of the food was only slightly warm. Kid’s chicken nuggets were obviously frozen and not high quality. Dessert with meal wasn’t even one you get to choose. It was a very sweet supposed chocolate pudding that was more like a mousse made from a mix. The floors and bathroom were dirty. Overall a very disappointing meal.
SKIP THIS PLACE
My wife and I agree. This the second time we have eaten here since their opening. The food is not all that bad or good, nor are the prices. BUT, the service is beyond awful. There is a waitperson there that will actually argue with you. In fact, the waitperson that waited on us was down right rude. She has to be an owner or related to the owner cause she truly doesn’t have any social skills to be in this kind of work. My wife ordered a veggi egg white omlet. The waitperson actually told my wife she couldn’t have one. After pointing out the availablity of the omelet on the menu, she reluctantly took the order. When my wife asked if she could substitute a small pancake for the toast, the waitperson rolled her eyes and loudly stated “no substitutions” But guess what? She forgot to tell the cook about the eggwhite omelet so I ate my meal (served cold) while they recooked my wife’s eggwhite omelet. We payed our bill and lleft only to look back at the waitperson running after us. She had added the bill incorrectly and wanted us to pay the differance (which we did). To add insult to injury, she told us that we were cheap tippers. It was at this point we asked to see the owner. The waitperson refused but having seen the owner go into his office earlier, my wife knocked on his door and discussed the situation with the waitperson hollering that my wife was lying. The manager did correct the waitperson’s actions, apologized and offered to buy our next meal (not the one they messed up today). My wife informed him that we would never return again and I suggest that you will be much better off avoiding this place also.
I simply stopped in for coffee a couple of weeks ago before catching a bus. Bottom of the pot is what I got and it wasn’t enough to fill the cup. No backup pot in view. I let it slide. Tried to pay with my debit card. Was told I can’t do it for under $5. Fine. I’ll have a pumpkin danish as well. Obviously not baked there. Still came to just under $5 but the waitress/cashier said she’d make an exception for me. Actually, she said “F*** it. I’ll run it anyway.” Prior to their opening, I had applied for a position. The owner was very rude. Kinda glad I never got an interview with my 25 years of restaurant experience.
i had a completly different experience. best chicken fried steak in town. wait staff helpful and cheery. had the dinner soup was good as well as the salad great corn bread muffin salad dressing was different but very good i liked it i will go back
Perhaps I am not an expert on food or dining, but I like this restaurant. I have eaten there 3 times since February and I think the food is reasonably priced and good. While I don’t expect to be treated like a queen, the staff was very friendly and I enjoyed their company. Their 5 course dinners are more like 7 course dinners and my son and husband liked the quantity and quality of food as well. I will definitely make this restaurant one of my regular stops.
Sounds like the restaurant had a rough start but I’ve been going there regularly for the past few mos. and always get greeted pleasantly and the food is tasty & of good quanity. They make the most delicious cornbread, vegetable soup & apple cobbler. I will definitely continue to be a regular customer and highly recommend to others to try.
I have eaten there two times in the past week, Wide variety on the menu, Wonderful service, Awesome Salads, Muffins are huge and most delicious. Servings are huge, be prepared to take part of the meal home for latter or stuff yourself for fun. Pleasant atmosphere. My friends and I enjoyed our meal and time there. We definately plan to go back.
