Today marks another win for civil equality and humanity.
New Mexico is officially the 17th state plus the District of Columbia to allow same sex marriage. The New Mexico Supreme Court declared it is unconstitutional to deny a marriage license to gay and lesbian couples. There were eight counties issuing marriage licenses before the law was ratified, according to AP.
Former NM Governor Gary Johnson celebrated the news on Twitter:

I believe that marriage equality only has a chance to succeed currently in AZ through a ballot measure. I don’t believe the current state legislature is enlightened enough to legislate this on its own. The bottom line is that as long as our fascist governor is in power, all bets are off. The fact that we have a law that specifically precludes government meddling with voter approved ballot measures, Brewer assaulted our recent medical marijuana law like a drag queen at a tractor pull.
Arizonans – we need to recall our governor, who wasn’t even elected by the people!
