Sen. John McCain has endorsed SB 1070, the illegal-immigration omnibus legislation that the Arizona Senate is scheduled to vote on this afternoon.

Politico reports:

Sen. John McCain has endorsed a tough Arizona anti-immigration bill that will let police arrest people who aren’t carrying identification, the latest move in McCain’s rightward shift in advance of a tough Republican Senate primary this summer.

“I think it’s a very important step forward,” McCain said Monday. “I can fully understand why the legislature would want to act.”

It’s a dramatic switch for a senator who supported comprehensive immigration reform with Democratic lion Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) just four years ago. McCain is facing a primary challenge from the right in former Rep. J.D. Hayworth.

Under the Arizona law, which passed the state House last week and is expected to be signed by Gov. Jan Brewer (R), police can arrest anyone

on “reasonable suspicion” that they are an illegal immigrant. If they’re not carrying a valid driver’s license or identity papers, police can arrest them.

Under current law, illegal immigration is a federal crime, and state law enforcement officials can only ask about it if a person is suspected of another crime.

  1. The only reason that he does this is that he thinks that he has to out tea-bag JD to keep his seat. He’s digging himself deeper by the minute. He brought Sarah down here for the Kiss of Death in public and now this. He’s fading fast.

Glassman is looking better by the moment!

  2. This bill is such a good idea, it should be passed by the governor in Arizona, this would set such a good example for all other states in America, it will show how real immigration laws should be enforce, it would stop illegal immigrants plan from conquering American for their own purpose, and it would stop them from changing our American Constitution for their own purposes, which is our laws, rules, and regulations! it would help stop their over population! I hope the governor in Arizonia pass this bill. also Arizonia and all other states, someone must hurry and work on our American birthrights, this is something that illegal immigrants take fully advantage of, and it is just left so wide open to them, they use this just for the sake of having their children born here so they can get granted an automatic American citizenships, to me this is their sneaky amnesty for their children alone, it allows, and help them to over populate them selves in America at a very rapid pace, it helps them to benefit social services, and many other American governor freebies, oue employment, it helps them to hollar about being so separated from their American children when they are in the process of being deported, it saves them from being deported! This is their tokens, tickets and of course their anchores that keep them here on American soil, this helps them manipulate our politicians into an amnesty, a path to citizenship for them. All of their wrongdoings in America seems to be gaining them a amnesty a path to citizenship over American citizens heads!! all while Americans are being so ignored when it comes to illegal immigration in America!

  3. Well Violet…how can this be enforced without racial profiling and unnecessary time by law enforcement officers? I don’t always carry an i.d. when I’m out walking or as a passenger with my husband. I’m an American citizen. Should I be stopped and arrested because the officer has “reasonable suspicion” that I’m an illegal immigrant. I don’t buy the argument that it will be used only for traffic stops. Remember, illegal immigrants aren’t just of hispanic origin. Let’s focus on border security, immigration reform, crime prevention and enforcement, and stronger oversight of employer’s hiring practices to tackle the issues, not some ridiculous law that makes Arizona look ridiculous!

  4. Well said Josie. SB 1070 is a joke for the jokers who support it. McCain you have finally lost your mind. Aside from this bill being wrong on so many levels…. it will have severe economic repercussions for the Arizona economy, but that’s too much forethought for these idiots to understand in their blind hate…. Arizona takes two steps back instead of two steps forward.

  5. Arizona is looking more and more like little Germany when Hitler was in power I am getting fed up with all this hate

  6. What happened to peace,Liberty, and Justice for all ?? why are there so many Racist people violet unless you are a native american your ancestors were from europe and immigrant at one time. The native americans didn’t invite them what if the goverment went on a witch hunt for your race!! would you think the same way the African Americans had to fight againest people like you I hope one day you and your family won’t have to be in fear of your Government!! and as for toothless maybe one day they will change the law and arrest people with an ugly mug and a messed up grill like your’s and you know who you are ha! ha!

  7. The answer to Arizona’s immigration concerns will not be addressed by passing harsh unrealistic laws that hinge more on the bases of “racial profiling” than effective law enforcement. At some point (hopefully soon)those elected will begin to a seriously consider why indidividuals leave their homeland in Mexico and travel across a hot, dangerous desert – they too want to work and earn a living for themselves and their families. Whatever happened to NAFA? Yes, the North American Fair Trade Agreement that was suppose to create “jobs with respectable wages” for those living south of the US and in parts of Canada. Former VP Cheney “outsourced” jobs and companies (his own as well – Halliburton) to foreign countries and did nothing for the country that borders the US? There are not enough ($$)manpower and resources to comply with SB 1070 if it passes. What happens when the jails began to fill up – due to officers trying to do their job? What happens when those sitting in our jails are not sent back or the courts become -clogged/bottlenecked with cases (money to house)? What happens when officers exercise “reasonable suspicion” on the wrong person? I have left my home w/o ID to run in the morning/walk in the evening and or to quickly go to the store – thinking my wallet was under the seat or in the glove compartment? There are more effectively ways to address this issue – SB 1070 is not the way. A better thought would be for this bill’s originator – Senator Pearce, R-Mesa, and Judy Burgess, R-Skull Valley to move back to Alabama/pre-WWII Germany and resurrect the hate and extremist ideology that are trying to cultivate in the AZ. Arizona is better than this and them!

  8. I am totally with you Violet, what part of “Illegal” don’t these people understand. If anyone regardless of color, race or creed is doing something “Illegal” they need to be arrested! I have no issues with anyone coming to the U.S. to make a better life for themselves if they do it “legally.” I currently work in the field of law enforcement and the amount of identity theft involving illegal immigrants is horrific. This is just not a Hispanic thing, it goes for ALL illegal immigrants.
I you want to work and live here go through the proper channels, receive your paper work, pay taxes and health care cost just like I our citizen have to. I don’t know how many times I have been stop by law enforcement and have been required to show my driver’s license to prove I have a right to be driving. Why should this be different for anyone else and yes, there was a time when I received a citation for not having my identification on me and had to go to court to prove my status, not to mention that I am as white as they come with blonde hair and have a law enforcement job. My point again, if I have to prove my citizenship why shouldn’t anyone else
