I’ve never really understood the appeal of New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd – I think she generally relies on broad caricatures and reduces complex issues into celebrity gossip – but her column today, which mysteriously includes a “joke” of sorts in a discussion of child rape, might be a step too far:

Standing a few feet away from Jerry Sandusky, as he laughed and reminisced with friends in the front row of the courtroom, made me want to take a shower.

Just not in the Penn State locker room.

That was the gateway to horror where innocence was devoured by evil, over and over and over again, without a word being said. Just rhythmic smacking and slapping noises, silent screams, gutted psyches.

The editor of the Tucson Weekly. I have no idea how I got here.

  1. Maureen Dowd consistently writes insightful, witty columns that take people in high places to task for their poor behavior. She is, of course, commenting here on Sandusky’s repulsive behavior and complete lack of remorse. Her words are totally appropriate for the situation.

  2. I think Mr. Gibson is wrong. Her column is dead on. There is no “joke” here, only the horror that Pen State let fester.

  3. I am really disappointed in you, Dan, for not understanding Maureen Dowd’s remarkable abilities to cut to the heart of the matter the build out from there. If I were heterosexual I would definately pursue a relationship with her.

  4. Mr. Gibson, I don’t mean to be cruel, but if you don’t understand why Maureen Dowd is the best of the best, and a star columnist for the Times, you are destined to stay in alternative journalism. When she is on, there is no one in American journalism who comes close to her style and insight. Go back and read her stuff on W. She was light years ahead of anyone else in the country.

  5. “I’ve never really understand the appeal.. ” is the beginning of this column.

    It speaks for itself.

  6. You hit it right on Danny boy…..it was your inner conservative fighting to get out of the liberal shell……..”Bravo Dan”…..I’m sure Burnie will concur…….
