This is probably surprising to no one, but according to a campaign press release, Gabrielle Giffords is planning to vote for Jonathan Rothchild in the forthcoming mayoral election:

According to Commander Mark Kelly, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ husband who retired from the military this month, his wife is “looking forward” to voting for Democratic candidate for Mayor of Tucson Jonathan Rothschild in the upcoming November election.

Commander Kelly made the announcement Sunday at the Arizona Democratic Party’s 2011 Volunteer Awards Night dinner at the Arizona Science Center in Phoenix.

Rothschild, who was unable to attend due to a prior commitment, received the news via Twitter feed “…and I can tell you Gabby is looking forward to receiving [her] Vote By Mail ballot so she can vote for her friend Jonathan Rothschild for Mayor.”

“Congresswoman Giffords is an inspiration and a role model, to the world and to me personally. I have known her since she knocked on my door in her first legislative race and I was immediately won over. I’ve supported her in every campaign since,” said Rothschild. “I am incredibly touched and honored to receive this show of support.”

  1. Can a resident of Texas vote in a Tucson City election? Her primary residence has been Austin for many years. Her children and husband have been living there for many years and we are to believe she’s just visiting Austin but that her primary residence is Tucson?

  2. Rothschild’s accomplishments are that he inherited a law firm from his dad and served as the Democrat Party Treasurer for a long time. Why would someone spend almost $300,000 to get a job that pays $36,000 a year? This looks a lot like a political party pushing ‘their guy’.

Haven’t we learned our lesson already about electing highly partisan people that lack accomplishment? Is it an ego thing? Spending $300k for a 36k job that you have no accomplishment to demonstrate an ability to do? Is it an ego thing?

  3. Her primary residence is not in Austin, her husband Mark Kelly lives in Houston because of NASA. She has a home here in Tucson, she is born and raised in Tucson, went to high school here, and her state residency is Arizona, not Texas. Regardless of how much time she spends in Texas she is still a resident of Arizona (Obviously since she is a state representative of District 8 in Tucson AZ). Do your homework before you post a comment like this.

  4. I was born and raised in Memphis. I own 2 homes there. I guess I should run for Congress and vote in their elections……..
Look, the sophestrey about her NOT living in Austin while playing the loophole is long been uncovered. Let her vote…..so what, one vote. But nobody DOESN’T know she lives in Austin with her family and has for a long time. Mark isn’t even in NASA anymore.

  5. I looked into Rothschild and I think ‘Down’ is right. He is nice to listen to but when it comes down to it he hasn’t done anything that shows he can do the job of Mayor well. It reminds me of when Obama was running, nice to listen to and he was inspirational but he also didn’t have accomplishments that showed he could lead. We overlooked that and it was a mistake assuming it would all work out anyway.
Rothschild looks like the same thing. A lot of words, very few actual accomplishments, and none that show he can do the job of Mayor and none that demonstrate an ability to turn around a faultering City government.
Like you said ‘Down’, he inherited a law firm and was a Democrat Party muckity muck. I’m sure there’s a connection with being the Tresurer and getting $300k in donations. From what I can tell, since he isn’t seeking matching funds there is no limit on how much a single donation can be. 300k is sure an awful lot of money for a 36k job all right. Somebody would sure get a lot of ‘access’ for that kind of change.

  6. Grinnell does have what it takes. He was part of the replacement Rio Nuevo Board that had to take over the original board after it wasted all that money. It imediatly began asking the hard questions and shown a light on the actual costs should Tucson go forward with that hotel plan. That board continues to tresh out the waste and mismanagement the original board, along with sitting City Council members, participated in. The FBI isn’t done…..
Tucson needs Grinnell. He has a wisdom about how all the facets of a strong city work together and therefore a keen view of what isn’t functioning within that system. Our city’s economy is what’s not working right now. Grinnell knows how to make Tucson attractive to new business let’s face it, we need the jobs. Jobs in government increase the load on the economy. Private sector jobs are what make the economy truly go. We can’t revert back to hunting and gathering, employment is how we sustain ourselves and without some core business sectors generating new growth there won’t be new jobs. Grinnell understands this and he knows how to create an environment for business to want to grow here, in Tucson. No one can argue we need the jobs. Grinnell is the right man at the right time to present Tucson as the right place to do business, employ people, and live in a great city.

  7. The whine about Austin? Your evidence for them living in Austin right now while she is rehabbing in Houston is???

She was shot in the hometown she has been serving since 2001…she STILL has a residence here (not just properties like Mr Memphis) which gee, she slept in the night before she was shot…

  8. Let Congresswoman Giffords speak or write for herself. Then we can trust she is able to make a decision to vote for someone.

  9. that’s odd, i thought you had to live here to vote here. dont know what i was thinking. my apologies, vote away. i wonder if mark kelly is going to fill out her ballot as well.
