Although calls to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Southern Arizona affiliate office were not returned, yesterday the group put up a notice on its Facebook page to explain its relationship with Planned Parenthood Southern Arizona and where funds go locally that are raised in Tucson:

Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Southern Arizona Affiliate
A message to all of our supporters:

We’ve had lots of calls and posts about the news that Planned Parenthood will no longer receive funding from Komen Affiliates.

Know that nothing changes here in Southern Arizona, where we have never funded Planned Parenthood Arizona, and nor have they applied for a grant from us. Relations with PPAZ are very good; they have assured us today that Komen SAZ’s work and mission have our full support and that they encourage their own supporters to continue donating to Komen.

If you have any concerns, please let us know and we will forward them on to our national Komen office in Dallas. Meantime, know that we continue on our mission -with your much-needed help – to provide uninsured and under-insured women with free mammograms and treatment, and to guide them through our healthcare maze.

And know that 75 cents on every dollar donated stays here in the community, with the other 25 cents going towards research.

Yours sincerely, the Komen SAZ team

  1. You are a chapter of a national organization that caved to the right wing neanderthals. Maybe you should convince the national organization to overturn this instead of claiming innocence.

  2. “And know that 75 cents on every dollar donated stays here in the community, with the other 25 cents going towards research.”

What, exactly, does this mean, SGK? How is that 75 cents spent locally: screening, treatment, administration, research?

I find it hard to believe that the entire 25 percent going to Dallas is spent only on research. It’s quite public that the Komen HQ spends 20 percent of its entire massive take on administration, big salary for Nancy Brinker, lawsuits against other causes who dare to use “for the cure.”

  3. Belonging to a corrupt organization brings no honor. There is no reason whatsoever to believe anything you say. It has become clear that the foundation is being run by political hacks who are more interested in political gain than in women’s health. Shame on you all! Who knows where money donated actually goes. Direct contributions to Planned Parenthood will make more sense health and decency wise.
