Considering the videos shown by Sheriff Joe Arpaio today as part of his grand expose regarding Pres. Obama’s are hosted by the YouTube channel “TeaPartyPowerHour”, it’s possible that the commission he organized to look into the matter might not be entirely objective, but yet, Arpaio was out there claiming that he has “probable cause” to believe that the President’s birth certificate is a fraud.

I didn’t get through all the “evidence”, mostly because I think I have better things to do with my time, but it’s worth noting that one of the supposedly damning bits of evidence (that the PDF released by the White House has layers when opened in Adobe Illustrator) was discredited by the National Review almost a year ago. Of course, it took me at least fifteen seconds of Googling to find that bit of information, so maybe that was too much trouble.

Way to go, Joe. Maybe you should consider launching an investigation into actual problems facing your county instead, like the numerous sex crimes your department essentially ignored.

The editor of the Tucson Weekly. I have no idea how I got here.

  1. What do you expect. Joe’s clinging on, at this point. Anything to rally his lunatic base as sensible people drift away from him.

  2. bro..your dumb. you don’t even sit through the evidence with an open mind. you get to a point where the information frustrates you, then you run to google and blog away? i bet you never even served in the military huh? find another country!

  3. ya’ll should maybe take a look at the evidence for yourself before you make a judgement, otherwise your just close-minded individuals who fear change!

  4. There’s an open mind and then there’s an empty mind…Joe and his lil bunnies are in the latter category…

and the fear of change? That’d be the teapublicans who adore Joe, y’know the folks who want to take us back to a magical history that never existed except in their excited lil minds…

If that fits you, then you’re the one that needs a new country…I hear Iran has something just like the teapubs want, their religion actually IS the foundation of their govt…

  5. Sorry, but your attempt at discrediting Joe Arpaio based on the National Review discussion doesn’t fly – since Joe Arpaio report today addressed the National review discussion and then directly discounts it with new objective evidence and analysis done by his investigative team. Please read all of the evidence and view the video analysis of the birth certificate and of the Selective Service card that Joe Arpaio presented before concluding that it didn’t spend the time to google the National Review article. I can assure you that they did far more work than your google effort before they reached their conclusions that was presented today. Also President’s Selective Service Card is an obvious and poor forgery – but you will have to view the video evidence for 5 minutes to know that.

  6. Joe’s kicking butt he’s got my vote, I know liberals are backing law breaking people from the south of the border. And obama his times getting short in office No second term why he sucks as a leader……

  7. Dobbyman: What about Fox News and their Adobe expert that said the same thing (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/04/29… The point is that we’ve barked up this same stupid tree already and the same idiotic fruit will fall this time as last time. You have to deal with the fact that Obama, while you disagree with him, is just as American as any other citizen. Focus your attention on something productive. This is a waste of everyone’s time.

  8. Hey, if Joe and many like him are wrong, then sure, call him crazy if you must. But what if… just what IF he’s right? Why WOULDN’T a sane person look into this?

  9. tedgrafx: You know why? Because he’s terrible at his actual job and he should spend his time actually protecting the people of Maricopa County – the job he was elected to do – instead of chasing the presidential equivalent of chemtrails.

  10. Dan,
I am not for wasting anyone time, but I also respect other’s work and accept that the investigative team as honest and intelligent – consisting of two attorneys and three former law enforcement officers. In their report today, they directly addressed previous skeptics and other reviews. I have to accept that and conclude that Joe Arpaio has then moved the ball forward on this issue past previous efforts. The nayayers can’t then go backward and state that its a closed issue because the National Review or Fox News looked at it previously. I accept what Joe Arpaio indicated today that he has already accounted for past questions and reviews.
As far as this being not worth the time – well there is nothing more important than the US Constitution and following it.
I would accept a scientific rebuttal of the new Joe Arpaio evidence. Next step is now criminal probe, calling of witnesses, testimony from the person of interest and maybe a Grand Jury. All of that should proceed if their isn’t a credible expert rebuttal to the presentation today.
Talking is done – let this play out and we can talk again the next time the ball is moved again. Joe Arpaio will be moving tha ball again and I await for that or for a credible rebuttal.

  11. you want a ‘scientific rebuttal’ from lawyers and law enforcement officers?

There is no ball to roll here…

  12. Dan,
If you have read these posts from the folks that disagree with your “conclusion” then I have to believe that you have taken some interest in to what Sheriff Arpaio has uncovered and actually viewed the evidence that was posted online. However, I have not seen any comments from you regarding the evidence that was presented. What I did read from your column was a report that suggests that this is utter nonsense even though you admit not even reading the evidence. I’m glad you are not in law enforcement because you would probably send most of the evidence into the circular file before reading it.

  13. bwilde – its apparent to me that the Joe Arpaio investigative team had hired technical experts to assess and then produce the video evidence that was presented today under the leadership of the investigative team.

  14. oh my yes, and I’m sure no one else has bothered with these technical experts, joe’s the absolute first to hop on this lil bandwagon…

keep on digging, y’all are going nowhere except to make yourselves appear craazier than ever before.

meanwhile why not have those technical experts get on those cold sex crimes joe didn’t bother with? seems that’s more along the lines of his job description…

  15. evidence? OK, i’ll play! it’s a fake document…Now what are you jokers going to do about it?…

  16. Have a friend who is a teacher in graphic arts. She told me that a first year student could do a better job of falsifying Obama’s birth certificate than the one he’s presented as authentic. I’m sure Sheriff Joe Arpaio knows what he’s doing. Yes, he’s also doing a great job in Maricopa County. Only because he IS doing such a good job have Obama and the DOJ zeroed in on him trying to ruin and discredit him. They fear him for he is doing the job they refuse to do and he very well may discredit Obama and his gang.

  17. So, why are Obama’s school records still sealed? Why seal them? WHy didn’t this tool show us the birth certificate when this whole thing came up? I had to show my f-ing birth certificate at my silly little private industry job. Liars. All liars and frauds.

  18. If you had taken the time to actually review the evidence in the video (which you admit you didn’t) you would have seen why the NRO post doesn’t address at all the layers issue raised by the video. The NRO post just says layers are created, not how many layers and how those layers are determined (which is what the video addresses). Explain to me how you have “better things to do” than to actually research what you are writing about before you write about it? I’m a little confused by that. Do you typically take the analysis of conservative political bloggers over the opinions of forensic experts–without even watching their 5 minute videos explaining their results?

  19. They checked 9 layers and still say it can be debunked? When someone becomes President who is responsible to check their paperwork? And these people, are they considered experts?…..

  20. Over the past three years I have received a variety of emails claiming to be copies of Obama’s birth certificate. They all looked fake. I agree with Jones, where are his transcripts or records from college? Where is his school friends and relationships? Why do so many of his so called professors state they do not remember him in class? It seems he was a ghost. As far as the personal attacks on Joe are concerned, I remember the old statement that only folks who stick their head above the crowd are the ones people throw thinks at. One last thing, if the critics can bring facts rather than generalities, I will listen.

  21. Long, long ago in a galaxy far away, BCs used to be typed on a typewriter(google it if you are unfamiliar). My BC looks like this. “Flying letters”, clerk heaving on the L key(yloul, knlow, likles this). People have come forward that were present at his birth. If the loonies think the Prez was born in Kenya, find records of mom’s passport, etc. U can’t tell me this isn’t racially motivated.

  22. I have a FRAUDULENT birth certificate, but no one listens. If I can get one, I think Obama can get one.

  23. Looks like the sale of tin-hats is going to balloon down at the old war surplus store if the brainless joe-lovers posting on this thread are any indication…

Arpaio wouldn’t know a real crime if it ran up on the sidewalk and bit him on the ass…so he invents “crimes” in order to pursue his white-racist agenda…

  24. We Liberals drank the kool-aid and gave the Progressive cancer a gullible well-intentioned host. I fear the day of reckoning may be upon us.

  25. I admit to being stunned when the original birth certificate came out in layers. Because that is the obvious way you would create a forgery. Must be some explanation I thought. Why in the world would anyone do that? It’s soooo stupid.

So I have followed all of the links posters have pointed to that they believe disprove Arpaio’s examination. I have been hoping there were now clear explanations for the questions Sheriff Joe’s experts raise.

But the “proofs” I’ve seen so far all boil down to this statement: “OCR software is known to separate scans into layers.”

    True enough.

But, unfortunately, this doesn’t prove anything it turns out.

Joe’s examiners point out why OCR software takes this image and does not, in fact, create layers like the ones in the document offered. To do this, they run actual OCR software. While no expert, I’m reasonably accomplished at various scanning software and in Photoshop. In my admittedly humble opinion, Joe’s videos raise questions that I think need to be addressed.

This should be simple to do. All someone needs to do is to find out what OCR software Hawaii uses, and show that it creates the kinds of layers that Joe’s experts see. Because this is so obvious and so simple to do, I can’t help but wonder why no one has done it yet.

And the obvious inference is that it hasn’t been done yet because they can’t.

It’s true enough that the internet is full of conspiracy theorists for whom no proof will ever be enough. But Joe’s experts raise valid questions that could easily be addressed. And because the administration released such a ridiculous layered document, they really need to explain this. Citing an expert isn’t enough. They’ve got to show the real software that did this, show other Hawaii examples, that sort of thing. It’s not good for the country to have this thing laying out there like this and it would be trivial to make it go away if it is in fact, not a forgery.
