A bulletin to the press let us know this morning that Gabby Giffords, the former Southern Arizona member of Congress, is set to endorse Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick in the race to unseat Republican Congresswoman Martha McSally.

Giffords once held McSally’s seat but her career was cut short when a crazed gunman opened fire at her Congress on Your Corner event in 2011, killing six and wounding 13, including Giffords, who miraculously survived being shot through the head.

Kirkpatrick represented Arizona’s Congressional District 1 until she stepped down in 2016 to launch an unsuccessful challenge to Sen. John McCain. She has since moved to Tucson and is now one of several Democrats who hope to unseat McSally in Congressional District 2, a highly competitive district that McSally first won in 2014 by just 167 votes.

Other Democrats in the race include former state lawmakers Matt Heinz and Bruce Wheeler; businessman Billy Kovacs; and Mary Matiella, a former assistant secretary of the Army in the civilian role of financial management.

Giffords will be joining her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, and Kirkpatrick at an event this afternoon for a “major announcement,” according the press release from Team Kirkpatrick.

  1. With McSally votes thus far against the interests of the people she should be an easy defeat, but we know there are still many ignorant unable to read or understand that will vote for her.

  2. Rather disappointed but what I’ve grown accustomed too this type of mentality in AZ politics. Go ahead and support the district shopper because she has the recognizable name.

  3. Its not that I don’t like Kirkpatrick, but I would like new blood in politics. Billy Kovacs has my support.

  4. I don’t trust any race after 2016 Pres Race. The face we have so many people supporting Kelli Ward is pretty dang traumatizing. I really like Mary Matiellas background in Fed Budget Finance and Comptroller positions Its something I don’t think we’ve had much in Congress. I’m not certain about her other positions yet. But I really like the idea of someone who really has understanding on how the budgets really effects the country after they’ve been passed and left into others hands to put them into action. I mean how many lawyers, soldiers or doctors do we need representing us?

  5. Billy Kovacs is the guy forAZCD2..He’s a local business man and he knows Southern Arizona… ANN IS a great woman. But this just isn’t her home and we need representative that has been doing life here in Southern Arizona

  6. Kirkpatrick was a disappointment in her “debate” with McCain. She missed many opportunities to make a positive statement on her own behalf as well as on the needs of Arizona. I am impressed with what Mary Matiellas would bring to Congress with her understanding of budget. Sorry that Gabby is considering supporting a former colleague rather than someone who has a better chance of showing up the weakness of McSally. Mary may be a winner!

  7. Bruce Wheeler, lives and has lived in the CD2 district, not like that carpetbagger Kirkpatrick. So dissapointed in Giffords but then what the DNC wants the DNC gets. To bad their track record lately has been full of losers. Wheeler served in the AZ legislature and is not a puppet of the DNC, a breath of fresh air instead of the political stench we have been subjected to.

  8. Party affiliation may become less important than agenda as Trump is proving when he courts moderate Democrats to assist in passing legislation. Look at how his numbers are coming up the last couple of weeks. Whoever it is better be able to work with him because RESIST is not the American way.

  9. The Resistance is the only thing that has saved us so far from the Republican Deathcare bills that would have defunded healthcare and thrown 22 to 32 MILLION AMERICANS off their existing health insurance, causing the death of thousands more people each year from lack of coverage. Trump is a malevolent, malignant narcissist and racist that needs constant supervision and opposition until Mr. Mueller reveals his treasonous conspiracy with Russia to steal his way into office. Viva la Resistance!

  10. Explain how the 20 or 30 million that have affordable health care, and are now victims in Las Vegas hospitals and are on Go Fund Me looking for donations to pay their medical expenses. Health care was more affordable before they made it affordable. People with pre existing conditions are now free to come and go as situations change, and they leave the true rate payers to be punished because of losses.
