The Phoenix New Times has an in-depth look at the crazy shit that went down in Marciopa County last week, including details about the arrests of executive editor Mike Lacey and CEO Jim Larkin. Check it out.
Also, the judge in the case has released a whole bunch o’ records and transcripts from the grand jury investigation, so there’s more news on the way.

Wow, the New Times still doesn’t admit even a whit of culpability for stirring the pot by ostentatiously publishing Joe Arpaio’s home address. Even though they are clearly on the right in this subpoena fiasco, what happened to the part about “praying we aren’t being arrogant”? You publish somebody’s address, you not only piss them off, but you really do invite cranks and misfits to fuck with that person’s home. It’s pretty lame of the New Times not to admit that much just because they’re basking in their newly refreshed validation.
Meanwhile, have you ever noticed how alternative weeklies are ignoring the San Francisco Bay Guardian’s lawsuit accusing Lacey and Larkin’s SF Weekly? You can usually count on journalists not to report on the business of journalism.
When a judge ruled that the case could go to trial, the BG’s Bruce Brugmann noted “this is a major victory for the local, independent, alternative press. And a major defeat for the VillageVoice/NewTimes/SF Weekly type of predatory chain journalism.”
Hey Ross, how about a link or two?
And speaking as somebody who read the New Times religiously in the 1980s, I can vouch for the drop in quality and originality since it got sucked into the Village Voice group. Though I am sure they had their reasons for doing so.
