While I’m generally a fan of heckling and not really the most passionate supporter of John McCain, I think choosing to yell seemingly random nonsense at the senator while he was speaking at a Memorial Day event was probably a bad idea.
This article appears in May 24-30, 2012.

John McCain, supporting Romney with the military today. Romney doesn’t have the slightest clue about the military. McCain is teach him his dog tricks.
I think heckling in general is tasteless and not productive. However, if heckling is ok on any other day–and more to the point, if McCain is worthy of heckling on any other day–why not on Memorial Day?
@Lunazen111: Because today isn’t about your or my political bent. Just about any other day, it is.
Actually it wasn’t random nonsense. If you listen carefully he was shouting about the USS Liberty. Attacked by Israel on June 8, 1967 the Liberty had her life rafts deliberately machine gunned in the water and was abandoned by the Sixth Fleet while the ship was still under attack and calling for help.
Senator McCain’s father was responsible for the US Navy investigation and participated in the cover-up that continues to this day.

@Bluedevil: Well, I certainly got all of that out of the yelling. The world is certainly a more informed place now.
Dan, your efforts might be better served with more research. A great example is Blue Devil’s reference to the USS Liberty. Your posts have been consistently sad.
Rip: I apologize for not sharing your opinion regarding the conspiracy theory you and a disruptive, inappropriate yelling guy share approval of.
There are times one just needs to shut ones yap and set politics aside.
The USS Liberty will never go away as long as this great nation lives and thrives from those few patriots who just want justice for the crew of survivors who never even got a chance to tell their story. That is exactly what this heckler is all about, and to top it all off McCain doesn’t want the Liberty story out there because his father was involved, and it is not pretty.
Why wasn’t McCain in Arizona making a Memorial Day speech??????
Thanks Dan for that thoughtful opinion and putting down jerks that agree with that heckler…..he was wrong…..
Dan, I often take issue with your blogs but not today. Thank you for writing this.
What is “theoretical” about the attack of the U.S.S. Liberty? Help me out there, Dan.
Dan, perhaps you should talk to the USS Liberty Veteran’s Association about a “conspiracy theory”. http://usslibertyveterans.org/
On June 8, 2005 the USS Liberty Veterans Association submitted A Report of War Crimes Committed Against the USS Liberty, June 8, 1967 to the Department of Defense in accordance with the DoD Law of War Program.

Excerpt:
“…without any warning, Israeli fighter aircraft
launched a rocket attack on USS Liberty. The aircraft made repeated firing passes, attacking USS Liberty with rockets and their internal cannons. After the first flight of fighter aircraft had exhausted their ordnance, subsequent flights of Israeli fighter aircraft continued to prosecute the attack with rockets, cannon fire, and napalm.”
Are you really as ill-educated as you proudly proclaim? If you want to honor our troops, get your facts straight.
Liss, as an alternative Dan can attend the memorial service we hold annually on June 8th at Arlington National Cemetery where he can speak with USS Liberty survivors and our families in attendance.
That ceremony is held at noon in Section 34 of Arlington National Cemetery at the site of the USS Liberty mass grave.
We routinely invite many Members of Congress to attend and participate in our memorial services especially when they are held in Washington, DC. In the past 45 years not a single Member of Congress has attended.
Respectfully,
Joe Meadors

Sorry, Bernie-ad hominem attacks don’t explain away facts. The heckler might well have been a jerk, but I don’t see you or anyone else denigrating him refuting the allegations about a cover-up in the Liberty incident.
I didnt personally attack anyone, debase the credibility (or lack thereof) of the source, nor did I even refute the claims of the USS Liberty…
I simply think I stated what would make for a great velvet painting to hang in my double wide.
I’m not arguing that the attack on the USS Liberty didn’t occur or even that I have an opinion one way or the other on what actually happened, but yelling disruptively at a US Senator at a Memorial Day event will almost always put your position in with the crackpots, regardless of the validity of your information.
I can understand the passion you feel regarding this issue, but you (collectively) might want to take some PR classes if you (including most of those who have commented) want people to actually listen.
We don’t need any PR advice from you, Dan. You begin by claiming that the heckler speaks nonsense. He does not. You suggest we should yield to the authority of John McCain. I do not. You appeal to the emotional subject of war dead as a means to assign guilt by association. We’re not buying it.
Its precisely because of those war dead that we can argue like a-holes over this subject…..
noncoms were being shot as McCain told the North Vietnamese that he was special, because of his father. He was a poor pilot, husband and senator. He deserves to be heckled.
“I simply think I stated what would make for a great velvet painting to hang in my double wide.”
Nope, you just did the typical strawman attacks on an incident whose interpretation you don’t share because you have no answers for the evidence that supports that interpretation. Rather like Senator McCain…neocons of a feather?
No Feltcher you are wrong…
PS: the USS Liberty never happened! LIES
I’d tell you to go argue with the surviving sailors, but I know trolls like yourself lack the courage. Enjoy your self-imposed ignorance.
