Comedian Doug Stanhope makes his home in Bisbee, which recently made a name for itself by becoming the first city in Arizona to recognize same-sex civil unions — and as it turns out, he was at the historic meeting where that ordinance was passed.

Stanhope, as quoted in the headline, appeared only to offer his support for human equality, saying “I’m not gay, and I think marriage is stupid,” before declaring that he came down in order to help prevent “buses of churches that were going to filibuster” the meeting — though he soon launched into complaints regarding the opening of the meeting with a prayer, saying “I found it absolutely abhorrent that this would be opened by a preacher preaching Jesus in a city function,” and noting that he, as an atheist, doesn’t get to begin city council meetings with his comments.

  1. Doug Stanhope is a fabulous comedian and a more fabulous human being for sticking up for the last legally discriminated groups in the United States! Kudos, Bisbee for taking this fight for equality to the streets knowing the machine is going to sue you into submission and make you tow the theist line. If there is any government benefit to paper marriage, it should be available to all!

  2. “Comedian Doug Stanhope makes his hope in Bisbee…”

Maybe this should read “Comedian Doug Stanhope makes his HOME in Bisbee…”

  3. Doug is not only a major league stand-up comedian. He is a major league stand up guy. A real mensch.

  4. I just want to take my 800th comment to say that Doug is the freakin man! – Good day!

  5. To open City Council and other governmental meetings (in TUCSON TOO) with a (Christianist) prayer is truly an ABOMINATION! It makes my skin crawl and is an egregious violation of my rights as a citizen of the country, state, county and town…

I agree with Stanhope that it MUST STOP!

There’s NO PLACE in the public sphere for one, narrow view based on unprovable, dangerous myths!

  6. And we need to take God out of the pledge of elegance to the United States of America.
Maybe we should re-wright the whole pledge while we’re at it. ( Equality for all.)
