Tucson Local Media is proud to announce that Mari Herreras has been named managing editor of the Tucson Weekly.
Herreras has been with the Weekly since 2007. In her seven years at the paper, the Tucson native has gotten to the heart of Tucson with compelling features and investigative pieces on everything from various controversies at the Tucson Unified School District to issues facing Tucson’s less-advantaged residents.
“When I returned to my hometown to work for our alternative newsweekly it was a dream come true,” Herreras said. “This next step allows me to continue to do what I love most: Tucson in all its beautiful, ugly and weird. I’m excited to bring my voice and vision to the Weekly and excited to hear from our most important voice—our readers.”
Tucson Local Media Publisher Ryan Kedzierski said, “Mari is the obvious choice for the position. She loves Tucson, is passionate about the direction the Tucson Weekly is going and will do her best to make sure it returns to being a strong, edgy publication our readers and the community can be proud of.”
Besides Herreras being promoted, Tucson Local Media is also excited to announce the addition of staff writer Heather Hoch, who started work on Nov. 24.
Hoch comes to the Tucson Local Media staff with two years of writing experience. Hoch was a writer for the Phoenix New Times.
This article appears in Dec 4-10, 2014.

Yeah, Mari! Congrats. The paper is in good hands.
Congratulations and good luck!
Smart move!
Wonderful news! Well deserved. Congratulations, Mari!
Where is Dan Gibson headed?
I know I may not always agree with your positions and views but I do think you are a talented writer and more than qualified for this position. I hope you never change your own voice and that you continue to find ways for the TW to be a platform for the community, even when it might disagree with your own views. It is a fine line but something tells me you will be cake walking it 🙂
Good Luck!
I wish we could reduce the amount of race that’s interjected into every discussion. That just drives a bigger wedge between the problem and solving it.
Well, Rat, you just interjected race into this discussion for no apparent reason, so why don’t you be the change you want to see?
And there’s a big difference between “interjecting” race and calling out thinly veiled and/or institutionalized racism that already persists among political leaders, law enforcement, schools, public policy, and other elements of our social fabric. Ignoring such institutionalized racism amounts to being part of the problem, while calling it out is not only the solution, it’s the only morally justifiable action to take. I trust Mari to have the courage to continue doing just that, with a clear eye and a clean conscience.
Congratulations, but please don’t bring your biases to the job…
Morally justifiable? That is precious.
Kind of like “hands up don’t shoot,” when we later find out that it is nothing but lies?
Many people assume racism where none exists. My comment was based on documented past performances.
Hey, Ryan Kedzierski: What bullshit. If you really want the Tucson Weekly to “return to being a strong, edgy publication,” then why has 10/13 Communications continually slashed the budget for freelance content since the company purchased the newspaper? It’s no secret that you are looking for the lowest common denominator when it comes to editorial quality.
…I thought something smelled fishy….
Congratulations on your promotion.
Congratulations! I’ve read the Weekly for many years (since the mid 80’s) but as of late I’ve found it increasingly difficult to enjoy due to the numerous typos and grammatical errors in every single issue. Is there no one proofreading articles before the paper goes to print? (Maybe that position was cut?) Please do something about this. Your article this week on Brian Davis was great but there were several times I had to go back and re-read sentences due to typos, dropped words, etc. Very frustrating and makes the Weekly look like a second-rate paper.
Congratulations Mari! Hopefully you bring something to the editor position that has been missing since Jimmy departed. DC
Hilarious! Great move, 10/13! I mean, perfectly in line with your bottom feeding standards. Hey, Ginger Cat, get ready for a huge slew of typos and grammatical errors. Ms. Herreras is clueless.
Fire Safier.
Wait a minute. This is an alternative paper? What are the alternatives? I thought this was a one horse town.
