Congressman Raul Grijalva responds to President’s Barack Obama’s jobs speech:
Congressional Progressive Caucus co-chairs Reps. Raúl M. Grijalva and Keith Ellison today released the following statement on the president’s jobs speech:
“The President has delivered a good start for putting Americans back to work that includes elements we as progressives have been calling for. Our country will finally make essential repairs to America’s roads and bridges. Wall Street and multi-millionaires will start to pay their fair share and support the country that has helped them prosper. The long-term unemployed, who have been hit hardest by the recession, will have the support they need while they find jobs.
For eight months, the Republicans have successfully paralyzed the national conversation by holding the people’s business hostage. They have shown no interest in putting the livelihoods of millions of working families ahead of their own narrow political goals. They have refused to take job creation seriously. As a result, we have seen record numbers of laid-off teachers, returning veterans struggling to find work, and firefighters and first responders hurting for funding.
The crisis is so severe that we must do more than the president has proposed. That’s why next week the Congressional Progressive Caucus will unveil our Framework to Rebuild the American Dream. It offers a bold, comprehensive progressive vision for America based on what we can do, not the Tea Party vision of what America can’t do. As we showed with the People’s Budget, we can create millions of jobs and eliminate the deficit within ten years if we choose the right priorities and make good decisions.
We join the President in calling on Congressional Republicans to put the national interest ahead of partisan stonewalling. We stand ready to move forward and put American families back to work.”
This article appears in Sep 8-14, 2011.

but you grijalva called for a boycott of Arizona!
Same thing with the democrats—-must handle Social Security—like raise the age in the future years and take SS taxes out to a higher maximum—also raise the age for medicare in future years. The Congress has stolen 2 trillion from SS. Put it back. we could collect interest on that money. Do it for the Nation
Grijalva is the problem, not the solution. He and his ilk have spent our country into near bankruptcy and now he wants to spend much, much more, all the while pointing fingers and ascribing evil motives to anyone who has enough common sense to disagree with his almost purely socialist agenda.
Hey Grijalva! What part of BROKE don’t you and your democrat friends understand? Just because your bank account is full doesn’t mean the rest of us have full accounts. The United States is Broke (no more money in the account). Quit spending that is not the answer. You want to save money cut this crap they call Obamacare. That would be a good start. While I’m at it quit funding the illegals. Yes you are reading this correctly………..if they want money or aid them them go back home or to a different country. We Americans are tired of doing without because of the illegals. We are tired of catering to them. If they do not speak our language then they can go back to where they came from. The only thing I can say to you is that if you don’t like it you can go with them…
To the uninformed Trainmanswife- I am a little confused on what you mean when you say “quit funding the illegals” Quit funding them on what level? Mexico is getting no aid from the U.S. When you say go back home, you must understand that this land that we call the southwest, is these peoples home. I also do not understand and would like you to explain how we Americans are doing without because of “illegals”. I think more of the problem is right wing government that put our country where it is at financially-esp. the bush era. On a final note, the people that came to this land should have assimilated the language of the peoples who were already here- not the other way around. So when you say “they can go back where they came from”, you sound very ignorant.
“For eight months, the Republicans have successfully paralyzed the national conversation by holding the people’s business hostage.” Is this idiot attempting to say that things were better 8 months ago. Oh I get it 8 months ago we were still dealing with the prior administrations strangle hold on the American public and then 8 months ago the grip was given to 1/2 of 1/3 of the Federal Government…………right.
Vic this one is for you. U.S. aid to Mexico in 2010 – both military/police and economic/social aid – would add over $800 million: the second-largest one-year amount ever appropriated to a single Latin American country. http://justf.org/blog/2010/05/18/more-aid-…. Now I’m not an advocate for throwing out millions of undocumented people but at least get things right if you wish to opine. Also the theory that the typical undocumented worker is from Sonora is ignorant (using your words) at best. Most of the guys I know (friends tenants coworkers) are from Jalisco, Puebla etc. Not saying their aren’t sonorans here but they are probably a plurality not nearly a majority. So the, this land is their land comments are silly.
Ok now on to economics. I got stated income loans under Bush Jr. and Clinton. The dot com bubble led to the real estate bubble, granted the Fed’s premise(Bush and Clinton admins) that all people have the “right” to own a home regardless of their solvency or spending/paying habits played a big part. The interesting thing about Americans is we are always chasing the next big thing. Why do you think gold prices are 5 times what they were 4 years ago…..speculation. Before gold there was real estate, before real estate the .coms I’m just hoping I can find the next one and jump in early and jump out early or maybe I’ll just keep working and learn my lesson.
In closing we need to stop pretending Bush is the devil and Obama is Jesus. I can put those 2 in any order Obama could be the devil Bush could be Jesus I don’t care. What they really are is a bunch of narcissists that really are usually trying to the best thing for the country based on their values and principles. Right/Left is not the problem government itself is the problem when they come in to any market they royally screw it up. Getting off my soap box now. Tell your congressman to stop F@#%$@#$ing with Sh^t and let the market get through this recession (yes we’re still in one if we stop tinkering with the numbers).
Thank you for the information moyla75. I am still a little confused on some of the funding to Mexico and maybe you can clarify for me. I am not sure if the House even accepted the Senates proposal of the 800 million, so if I can get an update on that it would be greatly appreciated. For all i know, the information in this outdated article from more than a year ago might not have even come to fruition.
Also, I am not seeing where in my article I said that most undocumented workers are typically from Sonora. I stated the the natives and the people we call mexicans would regularly travel north south before the american government took the land and made it illegal to cross what is now a border.
