Arizona lawmakers are coming out of the woodwork to voice their opposition on SB 1062. Who can blame them after Al Melvin’s deplorable performance on Anderson Cooper’s talk show on Monday night. Arizona Representatives Ann Kirkpatrick, Ron Barber and Raul Grijalva spoke out against the anti-gay legislation and urged Governor Jan Brewer to veto the bill.
“The far right of the conservative movement has been using our state as a petri dish for their anti-immigrant, anti-worker, anti-environment, anti-women, anti-education, anti-gun safety agenda for years now, and it needs to stop,” Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) told The Huffington Post. “Arizonans did not ask for this bill or any other form of state-sanctioned discrimination.”
“The Legislature ought to be creating jobs, not driving them away,” Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-Ariz.) told the Daily Sun. “This bill will hurt Arizonans, and I hope the governor will veto it.”
Rep. Ron Barber (D-Ariz.) called SB 1062 “a deeply offensive piece of legislation that would give legal protection to business owners who discriminate against certain groups of individuals” in a statement.
Governor Brewer is flying to Phoenix today after attending National Governors Association meetings. The deadline for Brewer to sign or veto this law is Saturday. Close friends and people “familiar with her thinking” told MSN that she’s leaning towards vetoing the bill.

It’s my right as an American to discriminate against certain groups, I hope she passes this bill.
There are many of us who will boycott AZ if she signs the bill and who have contacted big business based and/or located in AZ stating we will no longer support the business if the bill is signed, as well as letting travel companies and tourist places (including hotels, the national parks, etc.) know that if this bill passes, we will not go to AZ and are urging everyone we know to do the same. Sadly, it’s often money that talks, not basic decency (like following the Constitution and providing equality). Alan, you’re a idiot!
Alan, you’re a idiot! Why would we need a Constitution if it would give you the right to discriminate against anyone you want? Alan, you’re a idiot! And, fortunately, nobody has the right to discriminate against idiots!
Alan may be an idiot or not but he’s surely a troll…
I don’t like this bill. It smacks of the South in the 1950’s. But if a black café owner refuses to serve a bus full of KKK members on the way to a rally, is that covered. Or a Jewish Deli owner refuses service to a group of Nazi skinheads? This is a weird Pandora;s Box situation.
Damn, it was vetoed.
