Nick Martin at Talking Points Memo suggests that Gov. Jan Brewer’s executive order regarding DREAM Act kids might not have much impact:
Brewer, who signed Arizona’s harsh immigration law known as SB 1070 and who has butted heads with Obama on immigration multiple times, said her executive order was a direct response to the president’s program. But whether that response actually changes the way Arizona will deal with the program is another matter.
Schapira pointed out that Arizona already had a number of strict immigration laws in place, including one that barred illegal immigrants from getting drivers licenses or state issued identification cards. The law may have already been interpreted to bar any newly immune immigrants from getting those state IDs, Schapira said. That means Brewer’s order effectively carried no weight at all.
Even the governor admitted at a news conference late in the day that nothing really changed because of her order. “It actually is no different than what was already in place,” Brewer said.
Meanwhile, Congressman Raul Grijalva issues a response:
As Gov. Brewer knows very well, this order violates federal standards. It will be ruled unconstitutional after a lengthy legal process that costs our taxpayers even more money. I don’t know what it’s going to take for her to realize that states don’t get to ignore federal law. When seventy-three percent of Arizonans support the DREAM Act, you can’t even accuse her of playing politics. She’s just being herself, hurting our economy and pulling families apart to please a small minority of the population.
I’m holding an informational community workshop at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the VFW center in Nogales. Gov. Brewer is fighting yesterday’s battles on behalf of an outdated agenda few people agree with. I’m glad to provide assistance and serve the people of Southern Arizona; I don’t know what Gov. Brewer is glad about.
It’s outright un-American to let these young people hang in legal limbo for years without any kind of guidance, assistance or support. The Republicans in Congress have held the DREAM Act hostage, and President Obama was right to grant relief to eligible residents who were brought here at a young age and deserve a future.
As is too often the case, Gov. Brewer’s actions here are nothing more than political theater. Her executive order does nothing to solve our broken immigration system, get our economy going or provide security.
In writing the majority opinion in the Supreme Court’s recent SB 1070 ruling, Justice Kennedy said the national government has significant power, and responsibility, to regulate immigration. It’s long past time for Gov. Brewer and Congressional Republicans to end their pointless stunts and help the rest of us solve our broken immigration system by passing the DREAM Act and comprehensive immigration reform.
This article appears in Aug 16-22, 2012.

you go Gov. brewer, you to Grijalva, but you can go where we can’t see or hear you. You really should go to Mexico and run for office over there.
Just keep on insulting the intelligence of your people Grijalva. The days of the chunky little guy with the chicken and the button popping off are gone.
You are now dealing with third generation hispanic business people who busted their tail to get where they are and don’t want their achievements insulted by your vision from the past.
I will say though, since you’ve been in Washington, you’ve learned how to spew the liberal dialogue!
Sorry, but I agree with the Governor too. No Way No How should Illegal immigrants be taking OUR tax supported public benefits. When you were old enough to figure out YOU were illegal -YOU should have done something about it. NOT when someone says “hey dont worry about lying cheating stealing and breaking the law for all these years” , come on down! Cowards! The only ones who have NO say in it are stupid little 2 year olds.. they at LEAST have an excuse.. whats yours? What kind of a citizen will you make having lied, cheated, stolen, for all these years? Exactly.
It’s amazing …just amazing…..there are so many things that have to be done in Arizona to get things going again…and yet…our uneducated, narrow minded excuse for a Gubner and her Republican Legislature spend time on this BS and other nonsensical stuff that really doesn’t accomplish anything…..and all it does is further hurt the economy….and add division to an already polarized poitical process….I’ve never seen a solution to any of the problems here…none…and your sales tax that was temporary…she spent all that on a frivolous lawsuit…and guess what..it’s not temporary any more…it’s here to stay because she has single handedly trashed the economy….doesn’t want federal handouts….let Raytheon move out of state…doesn’t want the federal government in here…pack them up and move them too….there goes 50% of the jobs in Tucson alone….get real Jan…or get lost..
What part of illegal don’t you understand? They have been here long enough to work on becoming U.S.citizens. If you don’t want to do that then don’t expect the benefits of being a citizen.
Yesterday’s fight, today’s fight, and tomorrow’s fight: A battle that will be ongoing until we rid Arizona of UNWANTED CRIMINAL INVADERS. Thank you Jan, your efforts are appreciated.
“What part of illegal don’t you understand?!” parrots a largely European population which first stole this country from the Natives and then stole AZ from the Mexicans.
If they are in limbo and illegal, sending them home would end the limbo dance now wouldn’t it?
If they are legal and in limbo, well that’s a personal problem.
Arizona is a racist cesspool. I wish the feds would pull ALL funding to the state forever.
I wonder how many of the “illegal means illegal” crowd is clamoring for the laws to be applied to the Wall Streeters who have committed and continue to commit far worse crimes on a daily basis than simply being on the wrong side of a political line? Being in this country illegally is the legal and moral equivalent of a traffic ticket (seriously, it’s a civil offense, not criminal). When I hear the Tea Party crowd demand the law be applied to citizen bankers and not just migrant workers, their protests might hold some water.
Arizona certainly does bring to mind Germany in the 30’s. Scapegoating galore.
What is so racist about being a U.S. citizen? What is so racist about saying they have had enough time to become citizens? I agree with being a citizen to get any of the benefits the U.S. citizens get. Try going to Mexico by sneaking across the boarder then demand they speak to you in English and demand to get food stamps, medical and aid for yourself and kids. My guess it wouldn’t happen and that you would end up in jail. Why should it be any different here?
This from the man who wants the world to boycott his constitutents’ business because of SB1070. Too bad we have California Racist politics in Grijalva’s district. VOTE REPUBLICAN you dolts!
So….you want the U.S. to be like Mexico? It’s border btw..not boarder.Get a basic edumakajun sun.
and Dikwid Al-fuqwad thanks for proving my point.
The so-called “Dream Act” was voted down in the Democrat-majority Senate, so Obama decides to bypass the law and use his power as a dictator just so he can win the Hispanic vote. Grijalva is an idiot, and does not represent the best interests of the people of AZ.
“So….you want the U.S. to be like Mexico? It’s border btw..not boarder.Get a basic edumakajun sun.”
It’s amazing what a little bit of latino, will bring out of the crevasse’s. Hispanics want the U.S. to be like Mexico, come on ! Why that’s as absurd as the liberals, and minority’s across the country accusing Arizona of trying to re-establish the rule of the Third Reich in the state
The ignorant are learning to use computers. Too bad they use them to spew hatred. Let me introduce you to some of the young people who will benefit from the deferred action. They have high school diplomas and even college degrees, but can’t get jobs. They said the pledge of allegiance every day in their K-12 classrooms. Many of them had no idea their parents brought them here illegally. We have educated them, and now they can contribute positively to the American economy. That is not wrong.
Grijalva, to me, is a socialist racist and needs to go south across the border along with all the illegals. Grijalva is bad bad for the state of Arizona and it’s law abiding citizens. Vote him out of office please.
Jan Brewer is one of the few American politicians who is willing to stand up for the American people. She isn’t fighting yesterday’s battles; she’s fighting tomorrow’s battles, and if she doesn’t win the entire country will be toast.
Yes Brewer is living the past, back 10 years ago. When an individuals gets to a certain age. they cannot understand what the current and future will be. I am hash on her, but she is not FIT to run this state. There is so much to be done and with her and the Republicans its about illegals(at the lowest level) and women rights.
We need a leader and law makers who can set this state for the future, in Education, jobs and businesses. AZ has to be attractive for business to want to move here. Education is the KEY to the success of AZ. Yet. Republicans continue to take away funds for the kids. Yes, they provide big tax breaks to the few businesses that are in AZ. Lets set our sights of the future and building of this state. Vote Smart in Oct/Nov. vote for those that want a better future for AZ.
What a discourse! Too bad some of you and Grijalva cannot read. The law is very clear and Brewer, like her or not, only brought it to light. The illegal bypass of Congress does not allow anyone illegally here, intentionally or not, anything but a temporary work permit. These young people unknowingly stole from this country to get a free education and whatever else they could get. Grijalva is still seething over the Gadsden Purchase, he is about as clueless as Brewer.
This was in an email that I received the other day. I found it interesting. By the way, shut up Grijalva.
1. There will be no special bilingual programs in the schools.
2. All ballots will be in this nation’s language.
3. All government business will be conducted in our language.
4. Non-residents will NOT have the right to vote no matter how long they are here.
5. Non-citizens will NEVER be able to hold political office.
6. Foreigners will not be a burden to the taxpayers. No welfare, no food stamps, no health care, or other government assistance programs. Any burden will be deported.
7. Foreigners can invest in this country, but it must be an amount at least equal to 40,000 times the daily minimum wage.
8. If foreigners come here and buy land… options will be restricted. Certain parcels including waterfront property are reserved for citizens naturally born into this country.
9. Foreigners may have NO protests; NO demonstrations, NO waving of a foreign flag, no political organizing, NO bad-mouthing our president or his policies. These will lead to deportation.
10. If you do come to this country illegally, you will be actively hunted and, when caught, sent to jail until your deportation can be arranged. All assets will be taken from you.
Too strict?
The above laws are current immigration laws of MEXICO !
As evidenced by the many hateful and racist comments above, it is obvious that Folks like Brewer and her cabal are the tip of the iceberg. The bulk of the problem is the ignorant, hateful, and racist population of this state.
The best thing Arizona can do if you all really want to improve America is to SECEDE
Please get your ignorance and hatred out of my country.
Bob, You got that right.
Let me get your crazy logic straight;
1. Mexico has major issues economically and politically.
2. These issues have led to massive immigration (both legal and illegal) into the USA, so people can escape these problems and seek a better life.
3. Opponents of this immigration are now using Mexico’s laws (the country with the fucked up politics and laws) to support making US immigration laws tighter?
Do you want us to be Mexico or not?
If the answer is no, then we need to define our own standards, one cut above the rest of the world. If we are the best nation in the world, let us start acting like it again.
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.
”
Yeah. China kills Tibetans. China rules.
I wondered when we were going to experience that ugly, hateful, racist Phoenix-creep down here in Tucson. Their attempt to take over the conversation must be met with complete revulsion. We who call Tucson home for decades have lived in peace. Since Brewer took over after Napolitano left, Arizona has been the butt of a national joke. Pearce and his divisiveness was fortunately recalled, and Arpaio is now dealing with the Feds. (I notice J.T. Ready, the radical racist who violently murdered an entire family, including an infant, before committing suicide, has been conveniently wiped from the media). Horne attacked MAS, and now we have the Feds down here to referee. When will it all end? We, who actually live in the Tucson area, should be fighting with all our intelligence to push back the haters.
Sorry but I’m 100% behind Brewer… she is at least trying to SAFEGUARD Arizona while Grijalva sells us down the river to the Illegals. Lets all keep our fingers crossed that one of the “other hispanics” can unseat – The Toad.
