Congressman Raul Grijalva, running against Gabrielle Saucedo Mercer in this year’s race for Arizona’s new Congressional District 3, blogged about the forthcoming impact of Latino voters in this upcoming election. His belief, he writes, is that Latinos are going to make their presence felt this year because they value substance over style.

From TheHill.com:

Consider what we saw at the Republican convention: a parade of high-profile Latino conservatives was presented as an argument, all by itself, to vote for Mitt Romney. The speakers were not presented as emissaries from the Latino community, or signs of a changing and better future, but modern-day Horatio Alger stories who tried to prove that when you vote Republican, you too can succeed in America.

This is simply not going to work. It shows a profound Republican misunderstanding of the Latino community. Latino voters are not impressed by window dressing any more than other voters. They know the difference between style and substance. They know that when [San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro] talks about an America that includes rather than separates us, he’s telling the truth and speaking to their hopes for their own children. They also know that Florida Sen. Marco Rubio votes to cut Head Start and child nutrition programs and Medicaid even while he talks about his own exclusive version of the American Dream.

  1. Grijalva represents Latinos. Which is good. But, what about representing the rest of the population? No? Ok? Your choice !!

  2. Grijalva is racist ,he only represents the latino- voters the other people in his district have no voice to represent them. AS Americans we all need to be heard, that is his job.He takes our money too.

  3. Rep. Raul Grijalva is right. Latinos will be voting this fall, because they know that their votes are critical to the outcome of some races, including Arizona’s Senate race. As a non Latino, I fully feel that Rep. Grijalva is doing an excellent job for all constituents. I appreciate his focus on the middle class, on persons who are struggling, his stands in favor of the environment, and his positions for equality.

  4. Grijalva is a racist for sure. Besides any politician that boycotts or calls for boycotting their own state needs to resign. In Grijalva’s case he needs to go way south of the border along with his latino friends and illegals. We don’t need him nor them. Bye bye!

  5. Do any of the Grijalva haters actually believe that little miss Wing-nut (Gabrielle Saucedo Mercer) has a snowball’s chance? Even Jan Brewer ran away at warp speed from her.

  6. Remember folks: Caps Lock is on the left side of the keyboard, above the Shift key and below the Tab key. Make sure it’s been turned off before you post a comment.

  7. One of the biggest and most destructive problems that our country faces today is the serious lack of accurate information and extremely low level of voters’ true knowledge of the real issues.
To say that Raul is a racist is a red flag sign of this condition.
To say that he’s doing an excellent job is another.
To say that he represents La Raza is beyond ignorant.
To imply that representing La Raza is a danger to America, is not even on the IQ scale.
To make a comment about ‘south of the border’ and ‘We don’t need him nor them’ shows that you are just an ignorant racist moron – a true terrorist of the American way.
I worked hard and campaigned for Raul. And I am NOT happy with him or his performance at all!
But Mercer is a combination of his lazy-assed and above-reality, out-of-touch ‘politico’ – AND the moronic and racist crap that some of you are spewing here about Raul.
Which one is worse? Tough call – but Mercer is out-pigging Raul by 15 points – today.
Wake up people. Get informed. Get complete information. Stop being reactive robots to media headlines.

  8. Based upon Mr Grijalva’s actions during the past several years, I do not believe that he represents the latino vote. He is a good talker and attempts to pass himself off as a latino defender, but his actions show otherwise –he called for a boycott of Tucson businesses and that cost thousands of latinos their jobs. That is a fact. Did he support those who had come here to better themselves, but then had to leave because he cost them their jobs — NO he did not. He took no responsibility for his actions and all those who lost their jobs were left out in the cold. I hope we all remember that on election day.

  9. Yo soy un Latino! (I am a Latino) Grijalva does not represent the way I think nor does he represent so many more like me think, believe or live.
Adiós Raúl, vaya con Dios y desfruta su tiempo libre. Goodby Raul, God be with you and enjoy your free time).

  10. Greetings, Sr. Poster, who signed in here as “ollinsytems,” whatever the heck that is.

But I must tell you that what you posted has this gringo believing that his beloved Congressman, Raul Grijalva, is now wondering, “With a friend like this, who needs enemies?”

    Meanwhile, trust me.

    Grijalva will win.

    Ms. Saucedo is a joke.

  11. Grijalva may win, but he continues to bring shame on the state just as bad as Brewer. I understand that Brewer just lost out to Biden as the biggest fool in politics. Imagine that!

  12. More proof that Grijalva only represents a portion of the constituents in his district and not all constituents in his district. Will he ever learn that people who are undocumented aren’t constituents and don’t get services?

Gabby Mercer gets my protest vote even though I disagree with just about everything she says.

  13. I am white with German, Dutch, Irish ancestry. Raul is one of the very few in Congress who truly represents me. Teabaggers, burn in hell.

  14. Ironically – and please don’t tell anyone – I really can’t argue in total opposition to anything in this discussion. Except for anything that gives favor to Mercer. Raul has a few points in his favor, but they are weakened substantially by his faults.
I will stand 100% on my earlier rambling.
And as it relates to the headline and Raul’s epiphany about the Hispanic vote – well – he may as well say ‘Oreos are good with a glass of milk’.
And I ask you all – Are we not totally screwed in relation to the choice/s that we have in this situation?
