Sad news for fans of Greek fare in midtown — Greek Taverna, at 3225 N. Swan Road, will be shutting its doors for good at the close of business tomorrow.

According to Yanni Markou, the brother of owner George Markou, talk of closing the shop had gone back and forth for the past week or two, ’til the decision was made that Friday would be its last day in business.

The family has plans to re-open their Main Gate Square restaurant, The Fat Greek, “in a couple of months,” Markou said, though they’ll be doing so under a different name: Pelion Restaurant and Catering. Attentive Weekly chow-sters will remember that the Fat Greek closed for repairs after a broken pipe in the space above the restaurant caused severe water damage.

For Greek Taverna though, the plan is to keep serving food until the end of the day, at 9 p.m.—or ’til they run out of food.
