Michael Hicks did himself no favors whatsoever last night on The Daily Show. I don’t know if he realizes that basing your ideas and theories on “hearsay” is generally considered a bad thing. I’m personally so glad this guy partially oversees my son’s education.

The editor of the Tucson Weekly. I have no idea how I got here.

  1. Hicks states his comments were taken out of context and the interview was edited for humor rather than to inform. What, exactly was the misdirection? In The Daily Show interview, Hicks used complete sentences when talking about how he did not attend any MAS classes, – his info was based on hearsay, that only the MAS class was targeted, and his belief that feeding students burritos would build an [undesirable] bond to the teacher. I’m so glad I don’t have children attending that district…

  2. Racist Hicks declared that black people were only “a quarter” of a real person. This guy is a scumbag and represents the very worst of this country. How are you people in Arizona allowing this to happen? It is insane.

  3. JHC – How can these people run anythng? Not well, would be the best answer but it doesn’t really address the question.

  4. Living as a I do in a state also known for the effects of conservative inbreeding, I’m grateful to Michael Hicks for drawing national attention away from goings on here.

  5. Utah has no worries about national attention. Arizona has you guys beat by a thousand miles.

  6. Gee, and here, all this time, I thought educators had to be educated! What a joke this guy is! I feel sorry for anyone who has kids in school, anywhere NEAR this asshole! Who elected him in the FIRST place?

  7. Hicks, you are an embarrassment. How do you have a position where you can make a decision like this when you obviously don’t even have the fundamentals of US civil rights history correct? You are an educator? Write it out 100 times so you can remember it next time: “Rosa Parks” not “Rosa Clark” & 3/5 not 1/4. Who are the people who actually listen to you & believe you have anything of worthwhile to say? That is what is most appalling about this whole fiasco: you have people who actually LISTEN to you as if you spoke any “truth”- just ’cause you say so. Oh, yeah, you think hearsay is a viable educational medium. And you have the power & privilege to enforce your misinformed ideas through societal institutions. And did. You exemplify the very thing you are afraid that students might learn about. You are an object lesson. How much more clearly can students be taught about these concepts than through a study of your words, actions and deeds? Your exploits provide fodder for another chapter in the civil rights history of the US- an example of bigotry, ignorance, hatred and an abuse of power. You don’t want kids to think for themselves because you are afraid they might see their own “truth”, their own place in the history of this country that is not defined by a majority culture point of view. You are afraid they might actually succeed and you don’t REALLY want that. But isn’t that the point of education? Even for Mexican kids in Tucson?
