Yesterday, Jim Nintzel noted that the political world was buzzing about a poll showing that Terry Goddard had pulled within single-digits of Gov, Jan Brewer.

Well, the Goddard campaign just came forward with the details. Note that the poll referenced was not done statewide; it was simply done in Congressional District 5, a Republican-leaning swing district currently represented in Congress by Democrat Harry Mitchell.

PHOENIX – New polling data released today indicates Terry Goddard is gaining ground on Jan Brewer in the race for Governor of Arizona.

The poll, conducted on behalf of Project New West, shows that in one of the more conservative Congressional districts in Arizona, Terry Goddard has moved to within single digits with 45% of the vote, Brewer at 52%.

“Jan Brewer has failed to bring new jobs or new business to Arizona. She has failed us on education – and is willing to cut even more from the education budget. Times are bad, and voters are recognizing that Jan Brewer is not the kind of decisive leader we need, to lead us out of this mess,” added Goddard.

The huge gain of more than a dozen points since a Rasmussen poll on September 8, shows a dramatic shift in momentum as voters learn about Terry Goddard, his success as Attorney General, and his plan to bring new jobs and support business expansion in Arizona. “It’s encouraging because it shows tremendous movement, and it shows that voters are listening and responding to the real story of how badly Jan Brewer has failed this state,” said Attorney General Goddard.

The poll surveyed 509 likely voters in Congressional District 5, from September 13-16.

  3. Project New West is a Democrat organization. Moreover, this was a limited poll — it covered only voters in CD5. If Goddard is down 7 points in THIS poll, he is in big trouble.

    You realize that CD5 has an eight point Republican registration advantage right? Brewer ought to be kicking his ass three ways to Sunday in that district.

    It’s easy to pooh pooh the poll, but it was originally done as an internal poll for Mitchell’s campaign, not for public consumption. It is laughable to think they’d spend that much money to poll, then dummy up fake numbers just to make Mitchell and Goddard feel better. But hey, live in your own reality, I guess.

  5. There is simply no way to predict how the voters will behave in this election. Brewer was literally the most unpopular gov in the country in April; then she passes a law which is, when you get down to it, hostile to everyone in AZ, not just immigrants; and suddenly, she is double digits against someone who actually has very workable ideas about how to improve our state and can articulate them…bizarre really when you think about it. Then you have someone like Benny Qyale (misspelling intentional) in CD3 who gets nominated even though more republicans voted against him than actually voted for him. We will all be up late on Nov 2!! (Nov 3 if you are a repub 😉
