The Southern Arizona Gender Alliance is celebrating its transformation. The newly-independent nonprofit went through a rough patch while Wingspan (which SAGA was a branch of) prepared to close its doors last summer over financial problems.

SAGA’s Abby Jensen says they thought this week would be appropriate, since trans actress Laverne Cox visited us on Monday and there is an LGBTQ wellness and health conference all day today, where SAGA will have a table.

“Part of it is to reintroduce Tucson to SAGA to the fact that SAGA is still here and SAGA is doing great stuff and we want the community to know about us,” she says.

They also need a better picture of what Tucson’s transgender and gender nonconforming community looks like. “There will be paper pads with specific questions so people will be able to write down their thoughts about what SAGA needs to be doing, we can start getting an idea of where we should be focusing our efforts,” she says. Reaching out to trans people of color and youth is at the forefront of their efforts, too.

SAGA at the Tipping Point is happening at Fluxx Studios from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. There will be food, beer, wine and lots of music. It’s a free event.

  1. The SAGA Event written about in today’s Range happened three days ago. I hope that this is not the only coverage this event got (after the fact). They have been working hard to establish a hub for the Tucson trans community. I know that the Weekly has been good about covering events in the various communities and hope this is just an oversight or reprint. I haven’t gone back to other issues of the Range from this past week to see if this was also mentioned ahead of time.

  2. Actually, our Tipping Point party took place Saturday night as planned and as reported. The event on Monday was Laverne Cox’s appearance sponsored by AUSA and other campus organizations during which SAGA presented Laverne with the inaugural Alexander John Goodrum Catalyst of Change Award.

  3. More to the point, given the date on your comment, if you look at the date on the article, you’ll see that it was posted Friday. The problem is that The Range doesn’t email its digest of Friday posts until the following Monday.
