According to a Pima Community College press release, former chancellor Roy Flores will end his affiliation with the college on June 30 due to health reasons. Flores was expected to stay on the college payroll through June 2013:

Dr. Flores turned 70 on April 4. He served as PCC’s chancellor from March 2003 to February 2012.

Dr. Flores underwent quadruple-bypass surgery on Oct. 14, 2011 and an emergency angioplasty on Feb. 3. He was placed on medical leave on Feb. 9.

According to the terms of his contract, Dr. Flores would have been paid by the College through June 30, 2013, working on special projects at the direction of the Board of Governors.

His decision to retire from PCC a year earlier than expected means he will no longer be paid by the College after June 30, 2012.

Dr. Suzanne Miles was named Interim Chancellor by the Board on Feb. 29. A national search for a permanent Chancellor is underway. Dr. Miles, a 26-year veteran of PCC, will not apply for the post.

  1. Whether he saw the light or the Board finally began doing their jobs properly, this is good news. This whole situation was a total embarrassment to the college for months. Talk about emphasizing wasteful and mindless governance. This was a textbook model of Board malfeasance.

    Well put. But I don’t think the Board finally “began doing their jobs properly”. They were and are fully prepared to use taxpayer money to fund Flores’s sinecure. Nor do I think Flores saw the light.

    The reason Flores caved is because he knows the local newspaper is going to check up on those “special projects”. This a good (local) example for why having an independent press is so important to a Democracy. Sometimes it can put a “stop payment” on graft…
