On Thursday, June 16, a group of Tucson clergy issued a letter in support of ethnic studies:
June 16, 2011
Dear Board Members,
As faith leaders within the Tucson community we join the growing chorus of voices in defense of Ethnic Studies. The recent release of the audit has only affirmed what we have long believed – that the Ethnic Studies program is a valuable educational program that has fostered high academic achievement for its students, and has produced engaged community members.
We are writing to urge the Governing Board of the Tucson Unified School District to take the following actions:
§ Stand in support of the Ethnic Studies Program
§ Join the Mexican-American Studies teachers’ lawsuit against HB2281
§ Meet with students, teachers, and the community to strengthen and improve the Mexican-American Studies program
§ Publicly correct the misinformation disseminated about Mexican-American Studies at TUSDAs people of faith, we recognize how important our history and stories are to us. Scriptures are nothing more than the passed down stories of people who wanted their children and their children’s children to remember the ways in which God had moved within their lives and in the course of human history to bring forth freedom from slavery, forgiveness from retribution, love from hate, and grace from sin. The history of the people of faith within sacred scripture has never been the dominant history; our history is not the history of Egypt but the history of the Hebrew slaves, not the history of Babylon but the history of those carried away into captivity, not the history of Herod but the history of a refugee family who had to flee to Egypt, not the history of Rome but the history of a peasant named Jesus and his followers.
Because we understand how important our history is, we affirm the desire of others to learn their history. As a community of diverse religions, languages, and cultures, it is necessary that we not forget the richness that resides in the history of our people. The Ethnic Studies Program, by enriching the education of our youth, enriches our larger community and teaches us about the ever-important principles of tolerance and civil dialogue.
We encourage everyone in the Southern Arizona community to join together in support of the Tucson Unified School District’s Mexican-American Studies and the entire Ethnic Studies Program.
Sincerely
The Reverend Alison Harrington

Questions:
1- History IS important! How about we encourage the learning of AMERICAN history?
2- How many “ethnic studies programs” should we have to accommodate our diverse population? German-American? Pakistani-American? Fiji-American?
3- You write that “Scriptures are nothing more than the passed down stories of people …” Oh, my! You folks are “leaders” of what “faith” exactly?
Where were all these good people when they took God out of our schools, where they can’t hardly say our Pledge of Allegiance with “Under God, indivisible”, much less a prayer, a Christmas play, sing Christmas carols, have nativity scenes, etc? These bleeding hearts are only stirring up the racial hate and supporting La Raza. We don’t need no stinkin’ “ethnic” studies when we should be teaching Civics, Government, Social Studies, American History and World History. Otherwise, we would also need classes on all other nationalities, too. This is the United States, not Mexico and we speak English here.
None of this is surprising. Pastors Harrington, Fife, and Lefebvre are well-known advocates of Liberation Theology.
Just wondering if they read the books which are used in the class rooms but not provided to the auditors – they put on a dog and pony show while the auditors were around.
Hey look up thread!
Whitey-righty got a sunburn on his already red-neck. He is so used to making all the rules and bitching about the need for “local control” all the time. Now alas, when some locals try to control their own schools, whitey-righty gets a scowl on his puckered face. He should be in charge! And now look even the bible thumpers are against him. Dammit, it’s is bible too isn’t it?
Archie Bunker just doesn’t want to let go and become a fossil just yet. And one can hardly blame him. It’s evolution’s way to hold on as long as possible. But Archie is old and getting older, and American doesn’t belong to him any more. His kind is going extinct. The dust-bin of history is just a few years away. And being on the public dole with Medicare, can only keep his diseased heart ticking so much longer…
Poor Archie is dying and going down in a flame of ugly human hatefulness. Ah well. Not everyone ages gracefully. Can’t say we will miss you Archie. But we can say this: Hasta la vista baby!
