Remember several months ago, when the City Council voted to enlarge the Reid Park Zoo elephant enclosure, even though a group of Tucsonans was making some convincing arguments that the elephants could suffer and deteriorate by staying at the Reid Park Zoo?
Well, at the Los Angeles Zoo—where animal-rights folks have made similar arguments—an elephant has died.
You think this will make the Tucson City Council reconsider, seeing as it’s yet another bit of painful evidence that elephants need more space than the Reid Park Zoo could ever offer?
Nah. That would make too much sense, ya know … to do the right thing.

So this is what it’s come to: I am being a comment go-between, betwixt a reader and Tom Danehy. And these comments have NOTHING to do with elephants. Sigh. Anyway, here’s Danehy’s response, Ms. White: “Please tell Ms. White that the country officially known as Cote d’Ivoire is, in English, Ivory Coast, not The Ivory Coast. And despite the misguided musings of Bono and others, just last week the Washington Post reported that Human Rights Watch said that while a superficial truce is indeed in place, both the government and the rebels continue to terrorize the civilian population and deaths continue to mount. This even as the national team, the Elephants, participate on the world’s largest athletic stage. Stop a war, indeed.”
