Jim Nintzel has a little fun with the various Republican primaries in this week’s cover story, from disgraced former prosecutor Andrew Thomas’ insane “let’s just put a wall somewhere” Patton Line to Christine Jones’ song-and-dance routine celebrating Joe Arpaio. It’s an entertaining, if only-a-little-depressing-regarding-our-political-process, read.
Since the governor’s race started, I had made the joke on the John C. Scott Show and elsewhere that the Weekly would endorse Cap’n Al Melvin, but sadly, he couldn’t keep up the blistering pace of the race, dropping out a while back, leaving us without a candidate to give our imprimatur.
However, and I only speak for myself here as a Republican primary voter, I really hope Scott Smith wins. Not as a hysterical joke intended to guarantee a win for Fred Duval (like the thwarted pick of the Cap’n), but in a possibly misguided bit of hope that the general election might be an actual discussion of the issues facing our state and not a batshit crazy, dark money fueled trip into the depths of partisan nonsense. Doug Ducey, the man who will say anything to get the job? Christine Jones, a person who seems to live in an alternate universe based on her positions? I’m not super hopeful that either would provide a meaningful dialogue ahead of November. I don’t love Scott Smith’s policies on a number of issues, but he’s at least a rational human being willing to acknowledge that blaming Obama won’t solve any of our problems.
Listen, I get it, very few Republican voters will take the editor of the Weekly’s voting advice, but here’s hoping, right?

As a democrat got no dog in the republican primary fight! I am voting for whom ever the democrats run, am a bit tired of the republican geniuses who have done such a bang up job for the state!
Dan, I agree with you. However, primary voters, whether it be Democrat or Republican, tend to prefer symbolism over substance.
The others are pontificating over things they have no control over, and very little influence over.
Ralph’s comment is interesting. Have you taken a good look at what Tucson has become and who is in charge?
You may have more influence than you realize. So many are so overworked, underpaid and stressed that they have no time to give thought to primary elections.
That you take the primary seriously and are willing to state your picks is commendable, and if just a few read it, appreciate it and vote accordingly, it will have been worthwhile.
By the way, I agree that Smith is the best Republican choice. I look forward to reading more of your picks.
Just a quick follow-up, didn’t anyone notice that I posted at 12:29? 2 + 9 = 11. 12:11? It’s like time is counting down. To what?
What has the republican party did since Lincoln? Herbert Hoover, Nixon, Reagan, Bush Sr., Bush Jr., great depression, Watergate scandal, Amnesty for millions of illegals ironic joke on the right wing who see him as their messiah, father to a former drunk who had his other son steal a election in Florida with hanging chads the former drunk son, the last one asleep on watch during 9/11, housing bubble bust, stock market crash, a huge unemployment disaster, yes stellar results!
People have been saying that the city, country and world is coming to an end ever since the first memory of my Dad saying it when hippies grew their hair long.
If anyone can provide a specific time that this will happen, I’d like to plan for it.
Ralph Hill needs to get back on his meds. Or maybe, it is his meds talking.
“So many are so overworked, underpaid and stressed that they have no time to give thought to primary elections.”
Lazy and ignorant is more like it. Any one who can’t be bothered to take 2 minutes to fill in their mail-in ballot (and maybe spend a few hours watching the News, reading the web, or newspaper to find out who to vote for) shouldn’t be allowed to vote.
Since 1033 took over TucsonWeekly, there is less and less “Links” on Opinion/Current Web pages!!!!!!
