By the time you read this, the Arizona presidential preference vote will be over—thank goodness—and off the candidates will go to the Super Tuesday states.
As I watch the speeches and debates and whatnot, I keep coming back to one question: What kind of person would actually vote seriously for Rick Santorum?
The fact that this man has actually gained any sort of traction shows just how far the Republican Party has gone off the rails. He’s a definite bigot—his repeated comments on homosexuality prove this without a doubt. He’s arguably sexist—while some have said his comments about women being too emotional to serve in combat were taken out of context, there’s no doubt that he doesn’t think women should have the right to serve in combat situations.
And then there are his views on contraception—he doesn’t like birth control, period, and has even gone as far as saying he thinks states should have the right to ban contraception—which are so far out of mainstream thinking and so far from common sense that it’s troubling. Same goes for his stances on evolution, climate change and even basic environmentalism.
Yet here we are, heading into Super Tuesday, and Rick Santorum is one of the final two real contenders for the Republican presidential nomination.
I don’t get it.
Fortunately, I believe the vast majority of people out there don’t get it, either, and that very soon, Santorum will fade back into relative obscurity—which is where he belongs. But in the meantime, I can’t help but shake my head at the fact that this bigoted sexist has gotten as far as he has.

“I don’t get it.” (Posted by Jimmy Boegle, this date)
Dude’s just trying to make a living, Jimmy Boegle.
Jim, I see exactly what you are saying, but I think Santorum gets votes from those who just can’t bring themselves to vote for Romney. I don’t know exactly why they can’t, but they can’t. First it was Bachmann, then it was Gingerich, now it is Santorum. Each has risen and fallen, but Mitt has remained pretty much constant. The bottom line is, the Republicans don’t really like ANY of them. But there isn’t much they can do about that. US on the other hand, DO have a choice, and when the emerger emerges, he’ll face an even harder battle against the incumbent.
If you want to understand these primaries, go back 8 years and think about Whatzisname Kerry running against THAT incumbent.
Good old Rick, a man who’s claim to fame is that he was high on the list of “The 20 most corrupt politicians in Washington” as determined by independent watchdog groups. Voted out of office in his home district as a disgrace. Apparently stole 100,000$ from a small Pennsylvania town by faking a residency there and having them pay for his kids to go to a private online school. What a guy to be the “Rightous” candidate.
It is frightening for our republic that there are so many people willing to vote for a man like Santorum. And their vote counts the same as a vote from a person who is educated, knows the facts, and who cares about people and America. So many.
Uh…he is anti homosexual because he’s playing to the MAJORITY.
