In light of the controversy over Planned Parenthood’s donation of fetal tissue and organs to medical researchers, Gov. Doug Ducey is ordering an investigation into whether Planned Parenthood Arizona participates in such a program.

Ducey said that footage from a recent video about the use of fetal tissue for research is “horrifying and has no place in a civilized society.”

He has ordered the Department of Health Services to look into whether the sale of fetal tissue is occurring with Planned Parenthood Arizona clinics and to “immediately promulgate emergency rules designed to prohibit the illegal sale of any tissue from an unborn child.”

Federal law prohibits the sale of fetal tissue, but women can agree to donate their fetal tissue to medical research. Arizona law goes further in prohibiting the use of any fetal tissue in research, with very narrow exemptions.

Bryan Howard, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Arizona, says that his organization “does not have a fetal tissue donation program, however we applaud those who offer tissue donation at any time of their lives to improve medical science. We support fetal tissue donation, and have never supported the sale of fetal tissue, and claims otherwise made on the basis of a deceptively edited video are simply not true. As with all proposed health care laws and regulations, we will review any changes proposed by the Department to ensure they do not restrict access to the sexual and reproductive health services Arizona women and families need and want.”

The latest controversy erupted after the anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress secretly taped Dr. Deborah Nucatola, the senior director of medical services for Planned Parenthood Federation of America, talking about the fetal-tissue donation program. Fetal tissue can be used in research into cures for diseases such as diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. You can find details about that here.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards said last week that Planned Parenthood does not profit from the donation program but apologized for Nucatola’s tone in the undercover video.

“Our top priority is the compassionate care that we provide,” Richards said. “In the video, one of our staff members speaks in a way that does not reflect that compassion. This is unacceptable, and I personally apologize for the staff member’s tone and statements.”

  1. Was she terminated or is this just more of the same as we witness from the Obama administration? If they are receiving financial benefits, how long before babies tissue is black marketed on the streets?

Have another glass of wine honey. What do you care?

  2. Debbie T, I don’t have my head in the sand about this but I’m not going to accuse these people of being involved in the black market. The passions on both sides of this issue are extreme and often subject to extreme accusations. The video has context issues but the governor is right to follow up on this issue. I am accepting of the assurances of the people involved in this business in Az until proven otherwise. I abhor this business and wish the many alternatives available were chosen but here we are. We have an article intended to make our governor look malicious, nothing new there but since there is no “smoking gun” it comes down to the use of some bandwidth and…..?

  3. Flaming hypocrisy from Ducey. How about “investigating” the lies all those “pregnancy counseling centers” tell. Ducey is a pawn of the Arizona Center of the Taliban. Do you want Cathi Herrod running the the Arizona Department of Health Services? That’s what you get with Il Duce.

  4. Debbie, love the hyperbole. “How long until fetal tissue is black marketed on the streets?” (said in a sepulchral voice).
How long until other donated tissues are black marketed on the streets? Uh, never would be the answer as far as I know. This is America. Even if some were, it wouldn’t be a reason to stop scientific research or organ donations that save lives.

Shame on those using this video to advance their political agendas. It’s misleading, out of context, and unethically obtained.

Planned Parenthood is a non-profit organization that provides needed healthcare for women who otherwise couldn’t afford it. Only 3% of their service is abortion.

  5. Instead of wasting money on a RW investigation, Ducey should pay up what he owes schools.

  6. I am afraid that your hatred of conservatives has caused you both to become delusional. Please rethink your comments.

While in power in Afghanistan, the Taliban became notorious internationally for their sexism and misogyny. The stated aim of the Taliban was to create a “secure environment where the chastity and dignity of women may once again be sacrosanct,”[1] reportedly based on Pashtunwali beliefs about living in purdah.[2]

Afghan women were forced to wear the burqa at all times in public, because, according to one Taliban spokesman, “the face of a woman is a source of corruption” for men not related to them.[3] In a systematic segregation sometimes referred to as gender apartheid, women were not allowed to work, they were not allowed to be educated after the age of eight, and until then were permitted only to study the Qur’an.

Women seeking an education were forced to attend underground schools, where they and their teachers risked execution if caught.[4][5] They were not allowed to be treated by male doctors unless accompanied by a male chaperone, which led to illnesses remaining untreated. They faced public flogging and execution for violations of the Taliban’s laws.[6][7] The Taliban allowed and in some cases encouraged marriage for girls under the age of 16. Amnesty International reported that 80% of Afghan marriages were forced.[8]-wikipedia

  7. bslap It looks like the hyperbole has actually come to fruition with the release of the second video.

In this video, Mary Gatter, the Medical director at Planned Parenthood Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley in Calfiornia, discusses selling aborted baby body parts with undercover investigators posing as officials with a biotech company that acts as a middleman to sell aborted baby body parts to universities and other places that conduct such research. Gatter is a senior official within Planned Parenthood and is President of the Medical Directors’ Council, the central committee of all Planned Parenthood affiliate medical directors.

Gatter discusses the pricing of aborted baby body parts — telling the biotech company officials that the prices for such things as a baby’s liver, head or heart are negotiable. She also tells the officials that she could talk with the Planned Parenthood abortion practitioners to potentially alter the abortion procedure to kill the baby in a way that would best preserve those body parts after the unborn child is killed in the abortion.

    I am left speechless.

  8. For once Duchy-bag is partly correct.

Although the sentence should have read, “Ducey said that the recent (misleading, right-wing lie filled) video about the use of fetal tissue for research is “horrifying and has no place in a civilized society.”

Fetal tissue research DEFINITELY has a place in a CIVILIZED society. Alas, Arizona if far from a civilized place…

  9. And now for a little truth telling — rather rare in bat-crap crazy Arizona…

“…the full, unedited footage and transcript released by the group undermines their (the video’s) sensationalist claims, showing at least three crucial edits that reveal the Planned Parenthood official was instead discussing the reimbursement cost for consensual, legal tissue donations.”

    http://www.alternet.org/gender/how-video-a…

But then the USAmerican Taliban (anti-choice zealots) don’t want the Truth!

  10. So, what’s the going reimbursement rate for tissue donation? How is this determined? And, for all of you who support abortion and tissue “donation”, what’s your view on animal testing?

  11. ChetDude I am hoping that you can translate this one for me. I guess I just don’t get it:

“Let me just figure out what others are getting, and if this is in the ballpark, then it’s fine, if it’s still low, then we can bump it up. I want a Lamborghini.”-PP Medical Director Mary Gatter

  12. Debbie I think you are missing the real point here. That is, why do they support abortion?

Here are the cold hard facts:

On average, 1,876 black babies are aborted every day in the United States.

This incidence of abortion has resulted in a tremendous loss of life. It has been estimated that since 1973 Black women have had about 16 million abortions. Michael Novak had calculated “Since the number of current living Blacks (in the U.S.) is 36 million, the missing 16 million represents an enormous loss, for without abortion, America’s Black community would now number 52 million persons. It would be 36 percent larger than it is. Abortion has swept through the Black community like a scythe, cutting down every fourth member.” http://www.blackgenocide.org/black.html

So while they hold up signs that say “black lives matter,” they are getting help snuffing those out those very lives they want you to think need protection.

Then, to make matters worse there is this:

A highly significant 1993 Howard University study showed that African American women over age 50 were 4.7 times more likely to get breast cancer if they had had any abortions compared to women who had not had any abortions.

One could make the point that it is nothing more than government and institutional racism. Promoted by the left.

And then they criticize you because of their guilt. Don’t let that affect you.

  13. Sorry ChetDude but i wondered who was behind the defensive attack on the video.

Planned Parenthood released a lengthy attack on the Center for Medical Progress founder David Daleiden yesterday, and today pro-abortion RH Reality Check published an infographic that purports to show the connections between pro-life groups that had a hand in Daleiden’s videos that are now going viral all over the world.

RH Reality Check is a product of the pro-abortion UN Foundation, founded by Ted Turner and headed for many years by former Democrat Senator Tim Wirth, who was recently an honored guest at the Vatican conference on “climate change.”

Is your next endorsement from the Pope?

  14. Without Planned Parenthood where would my friends and I received free condoms in High School? This helped out so much with shy friends.

There should be a Planned Parenthood in every city. I teenager should be able to receive a free abortion without consent from her parents.

This is where Republicans get retarded, all the freedom from government and big brother, my body and privacy goes out the window when Zombie Jesus steps into the room.

Education and free birth control needs to be paramount at schools and at home. If that happens we won’t even need to worry about abortions.

Where are the feminists when there are issues that actually matter? Walking in another Slut parade or blogging about “man-spreading” I guess.

  15. Chetdude it may actually be you that is the stranger to the truth. The full unedited tape is available on their website and the lead investigator says they have thousands of hours yet to be shown. We can now see what PP has been paid to do. With out tax dollars.

And the President told us he was a Christian.
