Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz is the first high-profile figure to announce he is running for president. He made it official early this morning via a message on Twitter and then a speech where he mentioned Jesus Christ a few times. (Here’s a good “things you should know about Cruz” list compiled by NPR.)
The so-called Tea Party hero isn’t a fan, to say the least, of President Obama’s executive actions on immigration. He’d like to gut all of them—both deferred actions for undocumented youth and adults brought here as children, and deferred action for parents of U.S. citizen or legal resident kids.
Prior to Congress finally approving a budget for the Department of Homeland Security, Cruz was on the bandwagon to include an amendment that would have dismantled extended DACA and DAPA, which were later temporarily blocked by a Texas judge, anyway.
He has, in the past, expressed will to “facilitate” legal migration, such as more visas for workers. “Immigrants deserve a better system in which they will be welcomed to the United States safely and with dignity,” he says on his U.S. Senate campaign website. (Sounds like an all too familiar tactic to get the Latino vote.)
Cesar Vargas and Erika Andiola, co-directors of the Dream Action Coalition issued this statement about Cruz’s candidacy:
“The only policy Latinos hear from Ted Cruz is that he wants to end DACA for Dreamers, block DAPA for our parents, and obstruct immigration reform for years still. We reject Ted Cruz, which is sad, because while he is the first Latino to declare his candidacy, he may be the most anti-immigration candidate on stage during the debates.
While Ted Cruz has a Latino name and immigration in his past, that’s where the similarities between him and the Latino community end. While he may have taken over the niche left by Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann in leading the Tea Party, this doesn’t give him a serious chance at the presidency, and most likely he’s in the race in the same context as Donald Trump and Herman Cain: he’s there only to build his personal brand understanding he doesn’t have a real chance at winning the primary, let alone the general election.

The first clown is out of the car.
Dreamer leader..you mean illegal alien mouthpieces?
The first clown is still President.
Cruz will never be president. But he will be some sweet comic relief.
Why does it not surprise me that these “dreamers” think it’s o.k. to break the law and then get SS disability, Welfare, free lunches etc,…..woops I forgot inmates get all those plus free internet. So maybe the real solution is put these law breakers behind bars and that would solve both sides, correct?
Armchair600 can you provide a link to where the co-directors of the Dream Action Coalition have expressed support for ” SS disability , welfare, free lunches etc.” for “dreamers” ? Thanks.
Who made these “Dreamer” leaders the voice for the Latino Community? I am Latino and they most assuredly do not speak for me. I cannot believe they speak for anyone other than their own ilk.
Cruz is American first and Latino second, as are the vast majority of us with Latin heritage. I would expect him to act like an American under all circumstances, not a citizen of any other country.
This is a fundamental problem with many Dreamers; they want to be Latinos first. That, my friends, is wrong and one of the many, many reasons they must be sent back. America First – always!!!
CruZ is more of an American in his views than any any any progressive liberal socialist Quisling Democrat. This poor media flack has no understanding of our heritage , history or values or she would see that Hispanics would benefit from Cruz unlike under the Dems who only use minorities at …election times.
Imagine wanting to enforce the immigration laws as they currently stand. How barbaric and cruel. Central american gang member have a right to kill and rob American citizens without the constant fear of deportation spoiling their aim. It is somewhere in a penumbra of our constitution, one of Obama’s unpublished law review articles explains it all with his usual scintillating and incisive brilliance.
and yes this as about as much political news as bear taking a crap in the woods. Please go home illegals and take your little pequeñas espaldas mojadas with you.
We forget what Immigration Law is for:
Immigration Law is NOT for the convenience of immigrants, businesses or corporations. It is to preserve or INCREASE domestic employment and Standard of Living not LOWER it and to preserve our social services and education.
“It is not merely to deport the worst of the worst. It is to assure a rational, orderly process by which foreigners are admitted to our nation and to determine the conditions and duration of their residence. It is to deter illegal entry. And it is to REMOVE those who come or stay illegally.”
There is nothing wrong with the Immigration Law that we now have. It only needs to be enforced.
Obviously allowing more people into this country than can assimilate IS THE PROBLEM. So upping Immigration or making it easier for people to LEGALLY come here isn’t the answer – CONTROLLING IT is the answer!
I don’t agree with Cruz on much, but he has this at least partly right. Obama’s actions are unconstitutional and set a bad precedent.
Americans want enforcement of the immigration laws currently on the books. Unfortunately an alliance of slave-labor businesses and open borders groups, along with their sympathizers in the media, have effectively nullified American immigration law and the will of American voters.
Cruz is 100% a joke. I can’t believe I live in a country where this nitwit even thinks that he has a chance. He makes Mitt Romney look like JFK.
bslap stated “Americans want enforcement of the immigration laws currently on the books”. I guess this would mean that all of those here illegally would be identified and deported. However a Public Religion Research poll from 2014 found that just 19% of those polled nationwide supported identification and deportation of those here illegally. 60% of respondents supported letting those here illegally become citizens if certain requirements were met. An additional 17% or those polled supported letting these people become permanent legal residents, with no opportunity for citizenship. This is in sharp contrast to the claim that “Americans want enforcement of the immigration laws currently on the books”.
