This ought to be good: Ahead of a Phoenix speech today in which he is supposed to explain what kinder, gentler immigration policy he has finally landed on (for now), Republican president candidate Donald Trump is taking an impromptu trip to Mexico.

Jonathan Chait has a good laugh at the impulsive lunacy:

The Trump campaign appears to have convinced itself that the candidate will face not merely a polite reception but will win actual policy concessions for his lunatic agenda, reports Politico:

“Trump realized this would be a brilliant time to do it and is trying to pull it together last minute,” according another person close to the campaign who has been briefed by a campaign staffer. “Would be a major power play. It’s like he’s already negotiating on behalf of America.” The person suggested that the meeting could, for example, allow Trump to agree to deport only criminals if the Mexican president offered some sort of concession in return.

Sure, it makes tons of sense for Mexico’s president to offer up concessions to somebody who is not the sitting president, has a low probability of ever becoming president, continually changes his own stances, does not understand public policy in general, and is also probably the most hated person in Mexico since James K. Polk.

Can’t wait to see how this goes—as well as the speech tonight. I’m sure it will move the needle on Team Trump’s Latino support.

  1. I agree with Chelsea Handler. If the wall is gonna be built, the perfect time to do it is once Trump is in Mexico.

How oblivious can Trump be? This is about the equivalent of Al Sharpton deciding it’s a good idea to attend a Klan meeting.

  2. Trump just picked up three more states and possibly what is left of Mexico, if democrats can get them drivers licenses, they’ll be registered to vote. Hillary just got Trumped.

  3. This American of Mexican decent is going to vote for Trump.

Perhaps I can help him to build the wall. I learned to weld in metal shop at Bisbee High some 70 years ago and am keen to help Donnie control illegal immigration.

  4. I don’t know. Sounds like Mr. Art of the Deal went all weak-kneed when it came to taking a stance on the wall. I guess he could always build it with copies of Ann Coulter’s latest book.

  5. Let’s line the border with old democratic pant suits that Hillary won’t need after the election. Some of those are enough to scare off the hardened illegals.

  6. The problem is that Trump DID receive a “polite reception” in Mexico, even with a televised dual-dais press conference. And he made a proper fool out of the Mexican president Nieto, who stood like a wooden statue instead of hyperblasting him on the spot as Trump lied about what was said behind closed doors. Once Trump left the vicinity, Nieto finally woke up and Tweeted his version of the meeting – only to be quickly quagmired in denials and followed by Trump’s attack speech in Phoenix. Nieto not only came off as weak-kneed and bureaucratic, but more than a little naïve.

  7. trump did not discuss who was paying for the wall. Nieto tried to but it was the wrong time and place. He needs to be elected first. His immigration speech in Phoenix mirrored Bill’s 1995 speech on the same. Compare the transcripts.

  8. He said, he said. Nieto was interviewed on Mex TV. He said. Trump went to Phx. He said. Recently, 85% of Mex people polled said Nieto made a BIG mistake, and that he was a wimp. Clearly, Nieto gave Trump a double-dais and got blown off the stage.

  9. The Mexican president has 2 years left and, for whatever reason, he shot himself in the foot on TV and will just have to limp on somehow. The Phx speech by Trump seemed more of the same original bombast. Whenever this guy starts to get serious and explain some basic plans and procedures, it will be appreciated: “Your lives are going to get so much better, believe me!” just does not cover anything. Nothing is serious about promises that hollow.

  10. it worked for algore and his sky is falling approach to climate change. look at the sheeple running to believe it.
