The CEO, the publisher, the art director, the advertising director and I spent the better part of last week in Toronto at the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies Annual Convention.

A good time was had by all, especially at the luncheon on Friday, July 16, when the winners of the 2010 Altweekly Awards were announced—and I am proud to announce that the Tucson Weekly took home three big prizes.

Weekly art director Adam Kurtz nabbed top honors in the Editorial Layout category (less than 50,000 circulation) for his print layout of “The Strange Saga of Geronino’s Skull” (June 11, 2009).

After Adam’s big win, we celebrated in Toronto’s Church/Wellesley neighborhood; all I’ll say is that shots of a concoction that tasted like Andes mints were involved. They were tasty.

Anyway, I digress. Back to the awards … Renée Downing nabbed second place in the Political Column category, for “Unfortunately, Arizonans Are Getting What We’re Paying For” (Dec. 10, 2009), “Price Tags: The Elephant in the Room in Health Care” (Nov. 12, 2009) and “If You May One Day Need to Go to an ER, You Should Support Health-Care Reform” (Sept. 17, 2009).

Tim Vanderpool won his third Altweekly Award in the last three years, this time earning honorable mention in the Short-Form News category, for his coverage of Tucson Greyhound Park: “Kennel No. 1” (April 23, 2009), “Ordinance Ignored” (Oct. 15, 2009) and “Greyhound Runaround” (Dec. 3, 2009).

Congrats to Adam, Renée and Tim!

  1. Being new to Tucson I am reading the Weekly for the first Time with this issue. Some of the articles have confirmed my observations that many Tucsonans are more responsive to current information than long-term trends and many are focused on the superficial appearances of everything.

  2. Methinks it wrong and misleading to 1) paint an entire area’s residents with a broad brush and 2) base your opinions of an entire area based on one issue of a publication. No?

  3. Hey Jimmy,

All she did was call you superficial; she told Danehy he didn’t know how to think. I mean, true, it is embarrassing to be an Arizonan these days, but I really don’t like to have newcomers point out why. Maybe she won’t have her papers with her the first time TPD pulls her over for those out of state plates in the middle of summer and she can ply her copious charm in Mexico heretofor. Besides I consider you guys with all your faults to be a beacon of light.

  4. Actually, Robert, she didn’t call me superficial. She called “many Tucsonans” superficial. Based on what, I have no clue.

  5. Someone who is new to Tucson and reading the Weekly for the first time might be better served if they withheld their insights until they gather a bit more information. I wonder if Oracle Jayne just likes to see her name in the Top Commenters list…
