If you have been reading this blog for a while you probably know more about greyhounds and greyhound racing then you previously did.
When someone sent me this headline, I practically jumped out of my skin with excitement.
The Dog Protection Act is being proposed in New Hampshire, not Arizona. However, I am happy for the greyhounds in New Hampshire. Perhaps Arizona will be the next undertaking, what with the 180 missing and presumed dead greyhounds from last year.
According to this press release, more than 700 dogs have been injured in the past two years at New Hampshire tracks. Don’t think that this is an exception; it’s more the rule.
A 65-page report outlining the ills of the New Hampshire greyhounds has been sent to lawmakers in that state. To view photos, injuries, and deaths of New Hampshire greyhounds, click here. Greyhound racing is no picnic for the dogs.
This article appears in Feb 22-28, 2007.

Wouldn’t it be loverly to end Greyhound Racing Period! I recently visited an Arizona track (I was undercover) and managed to get back to the kennels. Greys were muzzled in their cages! Trainer said they chew the carpet scrap they lie on in their 3 X 4 cage, so he keeps them muzzled. Then he said they would be turned out in an hour and that’s why they were muzzled. Right! The greys were so excited to see a human being they whined and cried endlessly. When we opened a few of the cages one by one, they licked my hands and squealed with delight. My heart was breaking. I still feel sick to think that this is the way these beautiful, noble creatures live day after day after day, until they are killed.
I wonder how the people who benefit from the spoils of greyhound racing would like to be placed in a small cage, muzzled, twenty to twenty-two hours a day with NO stimulation! To be let out twice a week to chase an electronic rabbit that on occasions electrocutes them, if they don’t break a leg and get destroyed first!
To be loaded on trucks by haulers who are supposedly taking them to another track or a rescue group, only to be vanished by these haulers! Yes, vanished! Would these people like to disappear into thin air like the 177 greyhounds did in Arizona in the past year or two?
Disgusted with this money-grubbing industry!

Pat,
Thanks for the update. I have never been allowed back there but I did see some dogs in a holding area once that we went to pick up. A room as big as my bathroom had cages lined up 5 on one side and 4 on the other – double stacked. It was Feb 2006. The image remains vivid. I burst out crying as soon as I got back in the car.
Greyhounds in jeopardy: SPEAKING OF THE DOG PROTECTION ACT, URGENT PLEA:
Very concerned about this. This person will be removing Greyhounds from various tracks under deadline dates and may have limited access to where he can place them.
The person in question here also routed many injured and graded-off hounds to Hauler Richard Favreau who is responsible for the disappearance of 180 Greys from Arizona’s Tucson Greyhound Park. Carbonneau is listed as owner of many of these dogs. These dogs expelled from his kennel should not be allowed to leave the kennels wherever his bookings are.
THEIR LIVES ARE IN JEOPARDY. THE PERSON IN QUESTION HERE HAS A LONG STANDING REPUTATION OF DIS-REGARD FOR HUMANE TREATMENT OF GREYHOUNDS THAT IS WELL KNOWN IN THE AREAS IN WHICH HE RACES AND THE WELFARE OF THESE DOGS NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED BY ALL TRACKS HE HAS BEEN EXPELLED FROM.
PLEASE NOTE: National and local people need to be involved here to look toward the safety of these dogs. Owners of these racing hounds should be especially watchful as to their where-abouts and where these dogs are being sent; with who, to who, and all the other when and where’s applicable. The person in question here also routed many injured and graded-off hounds to Hauler Richard Favreau who is responsible for the disappearance of 180 Greys from Arizona’s Tucson Greyhound Park.
Please take this issue seriously.

W VA GREYHOUND/DOG PROTECTION ACT/: Will/May/Do/Don’t
“First they say they will, and then they won’t. And then they say they may, but then they don’t. Undecided now, but what are you gonna do?” Remember that old song from the 1940’s, 1950’s? Something more about sittin’ on a fence. Good grief, I’m not that old!!
Yeah, but that was just an old song and dance routine. This is NOT your father’s song and dance routine. Now we have newer ones. Bigger ones. New routines. New spin on old routines. But yes, it’s still the same old song and dance. First time you heard it? Except for one big important thing; I read an editorial that states the one big thing that’s going to make a difference in all our lives is the Internet. For all of us that can’t be in West Virginia, New Hampshire, or Mobile, Alabama, or Tucson, Arizona ~ we have the Internet. We can now share news about the good, the bad and the ugly that heretofore in our naive days was swept under the rug in the good old boy network. We’re supposed to be smarter.
Stand back ~ we have opinions to publish, online. The world has changed. News travels around the world in the blink of an eye. Nothing that happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas anymore. Now, It’s everybody’s business. For Greyhound owners, Breeders, and those who adopt the Greys when their racing careers are over what happens at the racetrack is everybody’s business. Are you minding your business? What the heck is happening in West Virginia? What’s happening to the Greyhounds that were singled out? Who is caring for and feeding them? Does anyone know? I was told someone lied. Someone falsified statements that Vets gave inoculations and vaccinations that they didn’t, placing all other greyhounds at risk. Any track officials want to comment on that? Any owners care to comment on that? What’s the penalty for lying? For falsifying a legal Certificate from a Vet?
The new BUZZ word everywhere is ‘transparency.’ And further, MORE PEOPLE THAN EVER CAN SEE RIGHT INTO ANY BUSINESS AND JUDGE BY DEEDS, NOT WORDS. So what do they say, versus what do they do? There was BIG OUTRAGE! wow! The next article after this one states: ALL SUSPENSION CHARGES have been dropped. Very interesting; now everything is all right and why did everyone get so riled up over nothing? What is the new definition of nothing?
To further quote a very wise man there is a further message:
If you do your homework, have your facts right and the merits on your side, and then build a constituency for ideals through the internet, you, too, can be at the table. The example of transparency shows that truth plus passion plus the Internet “can create an irresistible tide for change.”
Is someone minding their own business here? I hope so, because I can’t be there.
But I want to know what’s happening when it concerns the Greyhounds no matter where they are, who’s supposed to be doing something about it, and who’s getting away with it, and who’s sitting back thinking laws were made for everyone but them?
