Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas is visiting Tucson this week for two forums, where constituents can tell her what they think about the “AZ Kids Can’t Afford to Wait!” plan she unveiled early in October.
In the 156-page plan, Douglas put forward several proposals—including demanding the state to invest $400 million on teachers and gutting Common Core, among other solutions to the problems she sees in the state’s education system.
The plan was created after the statewide “We Are Listening Tour.” Douglas traveled to several cities throughout Arizona, hearing “concerns and suggestions” of parents, students and educators. After a total of 14 meetings, Douglas then compiled all of those comments, as well as suggestions made on the Arizona Department of Education website, and developed the proposals in the plan.
The “We Heard You” tour began in October, and will be wrapping up in Tucson on Thursday, Nov. 19.
Douglas’ first forum in the nearby area is on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Canyon del Oro High School’s auditorium, 25 W. Calle Concordia, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The following day, she’ll be at Catalina Magnet High School’s auditorium, 3645 E. Pima Street, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

A half hour rant about how Common Core is a socialist plot and not much else. She insists her power is legal, but the Courts disagreed. Did admit teacher are underpaid. Make sure to ask how she is going to accomplish anything since she is dismissed as a non entity by the governor , the legislature, the State Board and most local districts.
I hope someone brings recall petitions to the meetings.
The biggest problem in education in Arizona is the Republican “led” Legislature and Governor. They are dead-set against anyone not of their approved financial and familial status getting educated in this state, while they insist that their benefactors’ families have their educations paid for with taxpayer dollars via a voucher scheme. It’s going to be a very long time before anything meaningful gets done with regard to anything requiring leadership in this state.
I like all of the comments but I have one misgiving about the recall petition. DD is the only one who really stands up to Ducey and she does fight him and does have some power whether Ducey admits it or not.
I hope they keep the common core. THe kids are getting it and to change now…. well the kids are the ones who pay and no one in our state government seems to care about that.
