- Samantha Sais for The New York Times
Congratulations to freelance photographer and occasional TW contributor Samantha Sais for having one of her photos included on Buzzfeed’s list of most powerful images of the year. Sais’ photo appeared on the front page of The New York Times for a story about how immigration laws were splitting families.

Yes, congrats on the good photo.
BUT if they would obey the existing laws, they wouldn’t be split-up, would they?
Is it really necessary to discount such a work of art just to make a negative comment?
Hey Frakityfrak-if our politicians would craft the existing laws so that workers in Mexico could AFFORD to follow them (between $3K-$4K to comply fully in order to gain a work visa), they wouldn’t be FORCED to split up, now would they?
I actually think the other photo in the NYT story–the one of the mother hugging her son thru the fence–is a better image than this one. Nonetheless, nice to see Samantha get recognized for her work. She’s a pretty sharp photog that really flew under the radar here in Tucson.
There always has to be one xenophobic nitwit who is willing to rationalize harm done to someone because he’s terrified. And he’s angry that everyone else won’t be terrified with him. It must suck to live like that.
