Every single person who breached security and invaded the capitol with their guns and their racist rage and their white privilege should have been arrested and charged with committing terrorist acts. Yet virtually no one was arrested.
This is one of the biggest law enforcement failures in the history of our nation, and it was BY DESIGN. The Capitol Police purposely chose to set up a feeble perimeter, clearly were ordered to stand down and let the terrorists in, stood by while they ransacked the very heart of our democracy (or took selfies with the terrorists)–and then they let them leave! Thousands of people were allowed to waltz away from the crime scene without even being questioned, let alone detained.
This was an attempted coup, for the express purpose of disrupting the certification of a free and fair election. Everyone involved in this plot, from the President whose lies incited the terrorists, to the Republican members of Congress who attempted to steal the election, to the military leaders that refused calls to deploy the National Guard, to the Capitol Police leadership that facilitated the whole thing, should also be arrested and charged with sedition.
The people who aided, abetted, enabled, and participated in this historically heinous assault on democracy should spend the rest of their lives in jail.
History is full of dire examples of what happens when you coddle and enable fascists. It isn’t pretty. Americans aren’t very good at history, but we should all be reading up on the history of fascism right now.
