It appears that we now have at least three Republican candidates for this year’s City Council election.

The three GOP hopefuls filed on Friday, April 10.

Bill Hunt, a pilot who takes trips with the Tucson chapter of the Flying Samaritans, wants to challenge Democrat Regina Romero, who is seeking a third term in westside Ward 1.

Kelly Lawton, who works for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, wants to take on Democrat Paul Cunningham, who is seeking his second full term in northeastern Ward 2.

And Margaret Burkholder, who serves on the Vail School District governing board, wants to unseat Democrat Shirley Scott, who is seeking her fifth term in southeastern Ward 4.

There’s still no sign of a mayoral candidate. The Range had heard that a fellow named Zach Catsaros was putting together a campaign but his plans have hit some kind of snag. Catsaros has not replied to a Facebook message sent last week.

  1. You meant the whole lot in Phoenix and Wall Street, I mean DC, no, I mean Wall Street, no, wait, DC, didn’t you???

My local taxes are the ones I like paying, cause I actually get valuable services in return.

If anyone has some real criticisms of the city’s use of our taxes, bring ’em on. I’m an equal-opportunity politician hater. That said, the bar will be pretty high. I read a lot of what’s going on locally, and I think Tucson’s in a pretty good place. Certainly the mayor and council have their heads screwed on incrementally straighter than the local bureaucrats IMHO – they all seem rather uncomfortable pissing away my taxes trying to turn two blocks of Broadway into a freeway (yes, I am exaggerating in case you missed it). I mean, seriously, we tried that with Aviation already, and it’s like a block south of there. Can’t we just fill some potholes instead?

Why don’t all the carpetbaggers head down south of the border? Money rules down there, it should look like paradise to them. Same with Phoenix. Money rules up there too; why not live somewhere ‘better’???
