The latest numbers from the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office show that Congressman Ron Barber now leads GOP challenger Martha McSally by 932 votes.

Pima County did not county any votes yesterday, but expects to get rolling this afternoon. Yesterday’s press release from Pima County:

The Pima County Elections Department anticipates counting on Friday the remaining early ballots verified by the Pima County Recorder’s Office.

Of the approximately 261,450 early ballots verified by the Pima County Recorder’s Office, roughly 140 early ballots remain to be counted by the Pima County Elections Department.

Approximately 27,000 provisional ballots were issued at the polling places on Election Day. The Recorder’s Office has verified and turned over to the Elections Department 11,299 provisional ballots so far. Of those, 927 have been counted.

Pima County Elections Director Brad Nelson said he expects the counting of provisional ballots also will continue Friday. The count will begin at 1 p.m.

An as-yet-undetermined number of provisional and conditional ballots issued at the polling places will not be certified for a number of different reasons, including if voters failed to provide the appropriate identification, were not registered to vote, or already cast an early ballot before showing up at the polling places.

As Election 2012 is finalized, daily updates will be posted by 6 p.m. on Pima County’s home page, www.pima.gov, with the total number of ballots counted that day.

By statute, Pima County must certify its election results by Nov. 26.

  1. Perhaps prior to the next voting cycle it would behoove the Secretary of State’s office to CLEARLY spell out the correct dates by which early voters must return their ballots–by mail–for them to avoid becoming “provisional” (meaning “not counted”). Advising people that their votes are severely jeopardized if they drop their early ballot off at the the voting booth on the day of election would also be helpful. Another serious push should be made prior to registration deadlines to remind voters to change their addresses if they have relocated since the prior vote. Many of Arizona’s citizens wanted to be a part of this election, but due to misunderstandings, miscommunications (some deliberate, unfortunately), and lack of direction, their efforts will have been discarded. No matter which side of the political fence you favor, that’s just bad for the country.

  2. I cannot tell from the information what is the final deadline to declare someone the winner, and how many (approximate) ballots still to go (with approximate time needed to count and verify them). The importance of streamlining the voting systems nation wide are obvious, but I notice this Congress Representative is not being included in the critical conversations hitting this body of governance RIGHT NOW. This person needs to be there establishing a relationship and become part of the community. Whomever has the power to fix this for the future, Oh My God, fix it:(

  3. The Arizona elections officials and Secretary of State – and the Arizona Governor should all be made to wear pink underwear until this is resolved.
