There are five bags of these Takis snacks in the Tucson Weekly snack machine and everyday I walk past them (they’ve received the center, eye-level premium placement) and wonder what they are and whether they are a delicious secret functioning as a key unlocking a Narnia of flavor. It’s been sort of taxing on my brain, to be honest, so I submit this question to you, reader of The Range: are Takis good?

A few things that make Takis sort of appealing:

1. They’re cheaper than anything available in our snack machine, costing only 50 cents when most of the chips are a full buck in price.

2. I think the swirl used to dot the i is sort of hypnotizing.

3. The product info refers to the snacks as “tacos” (twelve to a serving size). I like tacos.

A few things that make me wonder if Takis are some sort of cruel culinary joke:

1. They have been in our snack machine for two weeks and even at their low price, no one has taken the flavor plunge. Usually the cheap items are terrible, with the exception of the Great Regular M&Ms Thursday of 2011.

2. One of the ingredients is “chicken fat”. Actually, I’m not sure how I feel about that. That could go either way.

3. While the snacks are apparently taco flavored, what aspect of tacos are they attempting to capture? Meat, the shell, all of the above? This is very confusing to me.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

  1. I know! We’ll get the government to do a pricey test on taste and quality. GSA can administer the contract. It can be ARRA funded and have some really cool signage made up touting Obama’s ARRA funding for this important project. Then, the government can spoon feed you the results.

Or you can spend the $.50 and actually be a journalist or a food critic or whatever it is your business card says you do and report on your findings.

  2. Yes! Takis are awesome, but not the original green bag.

You need the purple bag, Takis Fuego. They’re hot and spicy and best to eat with chopsticks. Yes, you read that right. Trust me on this as it will keep the red taki powder off of your hands, clothes, keyboard, and eyes (yowch).

  3. I am a firm believer that you should do the tasting yourself in order to decide. In order to like takis you have to first try them with a very open mind. You must be daring and open to palatal exploration ( if such a term exists). It is a combination of extreme sourness (lemon) and extreme salt and chili flavor. I recommend you take a small bite first. Savor it, to get your taste buds somewhat ready for what is to come. When it first touches your tongue you get this instant numbing like sudden burst of spicy chilli taste. To get the whole experience, you must be daring and continue to eat. You suddenly find yourself with a burning tongue, breathing rapidly through your mouth desperately trying to cool your tongue and you get a runny nose. You might even break a sweat. The taste can be addictive to some, yet others may never eat them again. The mere fact that you have not tried it already leads me to believe that you are not willing to risk your .50 and may not be daring enough to get out of your comfort zone. My advise is, live a little, try them. It may give you something to talk about for a week and it might give your co-workers a few laughs!

  4. JUST TRY IT!!! HOW WILL YOU EVER KNOW IF YOU DON’T TRY THEM??! If the worst should happen, and they are nasty (your version of nasty) then just spit it out! I happen to enjoy the purple bag flavor, fire and lime or something to that effect. I will say that they are much hotter than flaming hot cheetos, and that is coming from a mexican. However due to the heat level and lime tang, i can only eat a few at a time. Otherwise, i experience all the fires of hell in my gullet. A fire flame so intense not even prilosec can tame. I suggest a serving of 8 eaten with a cold sandwich, alternating a taki and a few bites of sandwich, to take the heat between takis. Happy munching!!!!!!
