The biggest shocker from today’s State of the State has to be Gov. Jan Brewer’s call to expand AHCCCS to 133 percent of the federal poverty level.
I wrote a piece on this last week if you need some background, but Brewer today called for the state grab the matching federal dollars and create a new tax on hospitals to pay for the state’s portion. Details remain sketchy, but the news is sure to delight Democrats and the hospital/healthcare lobby. Republican lawmakers have been frosty to the idea, so this is shaping up to the be the biggest fight of the session.

Has Brewer had an epiphany?! Or am I misreading the reports?! She recently spoke about funding education. Now she’s taking about expanding AHCCCS eligibility. I hate being cynical but it’s kind of scary. However, whatever, I hope she follows through.
Brewer is just getting too OLD to remember what the $#%@ she is talking about anymore. Lets just hope she does not have a relapse in her memory, that way she can follow thru with what she is talking about.
Gosh, I wish you political insiders would quit using terms like AHCCCS. Sure, you know what it means, but only political activists could give a crap. I realize that English is a dying language, especially in Tucson, but could you not at at least try?
The Gov. Finally got some sense?
Unbelievable! but the right thing to do.
Mind you… this is the same woman who spoke to the press at the Republican convention saying she hoped Obama would be elected.
I don’t trust her in any way, shape or form. Grabbing Federal money and then sweeping it into use as she sees fit would be appropriate for her record. As if any of this could get past the legislature anyways.
Herbert, I’m sympathetic to what you’re saying about acronyms, but this was a bulletin written on the fly and included a link back to an extended story that provided background on what AHCCCS is and what the expansion is all about.
hummmmmmmmm — wonder if she is going to do a Steve Kozachik move?? Be the smartest thing she has done in her political career if she did jump!!!
Why is this a shocker? Jan Brewer has always done what she found to be in the best interest of the legal residents of Arizona.
And Skookum’s idea of a “legal Resident” anyone with lily white skin.
Duh Jan.. you think?
You obviously must be planning on an illegal and fulite re-election campaign.
She’ll just spend it on something else…….remember the 1% sales tax for schools?
I guess she’s figure she’s killed enough poor people with her CUTTING of ACHHHS (Medicare) 2 years ago to pay for the republican’s huge tax cut for the rich…
And since the “economy” is “picking up” now, some republicraps have realized that they need masses of poor people to keep wages down…
So they must stop killing poor people off for a while…to build up the stock…
Bob Regan, a persons legal status has nothing to do with the color of their skin. A person who is here legally has met the requirements in law to be here. I know it’s hard for you to comprehend, but “undocumented workers” are breaking the law. We, the people, have a right to defend our country and protect out investment in the country (which we provide with our tax dollars and much of that gets used on illegals — when I say “we,” I assume you pay taxes, but as I type this, I’m thinking twice about that assumption)
