I wish the OPA! review had a little more specific location (in addition to the street address at the bottom) — either the closest cross street or perhaps naming what used to be in the space, especially if it was another restaurant. I intend to try it out, just would like a picture in my mind of where the place is. Good review, tho!
Jim Nintzel’s annual Ariz. legislature article always ranks among the best thing to happen to me in any given year. Goes without saying, this is a must-read. I haven’t even read it yet but I just wanted to express the excitement I felt upon seeing the front cover this week. Huzzah, Nintzel! Huzzah!
Scarlett: You’ll find OPA in the Albertson’s shopping center on the east side of Campbell Avenue, between Glenn Street and Blacklidge Drive. It’s located on the same free-standing island of resturants where you’ll find Sauce and Lovin’ Spoonfuls. IIRC, there was some noodle joint before OPA.
Gotta agree with Rita–the food is pita-riffic!
Dave: Thanks! With the rush of lawmakers to fill retiring Congressman John Shadegg’s seat, the session promises to get a lot more fun!
The noodle joint was Wild Noodles, IIRC.
Scarlett,
Jim is right on with the directions. OPA used to be Wild Noodles, I believe it was a franchise.
OPA is really good. Hopefully it will remain so and end up on the Best of Tucson list this year.
JN, oooh pita-riffic…wish I’d thought of that. I think I had the site mentioned at one point but cut it out due to word limit. Anyway, thanks for the help and complimnet. Karyn is right about Wild Noodles being a franchise. It was connected somehow to Eddie Matney, a well-known Phx area chef.
Connelly, you’re rita-riffic!
I still miss the Coco’s that sat at that location — late nite comfort food.
Thanks for reviewing places in Midtown, too. Other pubs seem to be hard on (!!) about places on the NW side. Guess that’s where the (new) Star (oops) staffers all live…
Scarlett, you’re about a block or two off. I think Coco’s is now a Japanese restaurant – the name escapes me – OPA! is further north. Two doors up from Sauce.
Rita: IIRC, the Coco’s was in the Albertson’s shopping center, while Yoshimatsu is now in a renovated Carrow’s. Anyone have photos?
Wow! You learn something every day. But it wasn’t where OPA is right? Maybe Old Chicago? Or did they tear the building down?
They tore the building down. Coco’s parking lot was right up against Blacklidge. Old Chicago shared the driveway, if I remember correctly.
So the new strip building sits on Coco’s grave.
Midtown rules.
And I’ve lived in the neighborhood for 15 years. I’m usually so up on that kind of stuff.
