This week’s cover story by Jim Nintzel looks at this year’s legislative session and surprising probably no one, the news isn’t all that good. However, let’s give Pearce, Adams, and crew some credit: they didn’t outlaw sex entirely, like they might have in Florida:
A person may not:
(a) Knowingly engage in any sexual conduct or sexual contact with an animal;
(b) Knowingly cause, aid, or abet another person to engage in any sexual conduct or sexual contact with an animal;
(c) Knowingly permit any sexual conduct or sexual contact with an animal to be conducted on any premises under his or her charge or control; or
(d) Knowingly organize, promote, conduct, advertise, aid, abet, participate in as an observer, or perform any service in the furtherance of an act involving any sexual conduct or sexual contact with an animal for a commercial or recreational purpose.
Arizona beat Florida to the anti-bestiality punch in 2006, but even though the colloquial usage of the term usually excludes humans, we had the good sense to actually define an “animal” as “as any non-human mammal, bird, reptile or amphibian, alive or dead”. Florida, however, didn’t bother, so since humans are still part of the Hominidae taxonomic family and technically still animals, once October of 2011 rolls around, you’re probably better off not taking any chances while in the Sunshine State.

This is almost as fun as the Oklahoma Legislature banning Sharia and other foreign sources of law. They probably thought the Old Testament was written in Nebraska.
Actually, Florida Statutes section 828.02 defines “animal” for every law of the state relating to or in any way affecting animals, as “every living dumb creature”. So by this logic, they’ve outlawed sex with dumb people. I define “dumb” as writing an article without properly researching the subject matter, so Dan Gibson should probably avoid Florida. Most people should be just fine.
