The sheriff’s obsession with his own fame, combined with his determination to keep his job no matter what, have caused him to bend the priorities of the department to his own needs. He has politicized a law enforcement agency, and in doing so, corrupted it.
That corruption has mired the Sheriff’s Office in incompetence and negligence, and has too many of the rank and file disillusioned and disgusted.
I know this because almost three years ago I was invited to join MCSO on a part-time basis — not by the sheriff, incidentally. The idea was that I would provide a perspective different than the conservative norm of the command staff.
I recently and reluctantly resigned because voices unwilling to toe the party line are no longer welcome.
A bunker mentality rules as the walls close in, information hemorrhages to the press from numerous anonymous inside sources, and paranoia and threats from the top continue.
To understand what has happened, start by understanding that illegal immigration and the “birther” business have one fascinating thing in common: Both began as crass ploys to appeal to voters, with Arpaio’s tone hardening as he somehow, over time, convinced himself that what he was peddling was actually so.
And it worked. Millions of dollars needed for his increasingly difficult re-election campaigns rolled in, along with the media attention he so desperately craves.
There’s nothing more complicated to any of it, and neither ever had much of anything to do with MCSO’s actual responsibilities. Yet they have cost the department dearly in money and manpower—resources that could have been better deployed elsewhere.

The Law (INA § 235(b)(1)(B)(iii)): “The removal of an alien who is inadmissible because the individual does not possess valid entry documents or is inadmissible for fraud or misrepresentation of material fact. The alien may be removed without a hearing before an immigration court.” pg 2, Box 1, right side.
Obama violating 2nd Amendment: On February 13th, 2013 Chris Crane, president of the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement Council states under oath to the Senate Judiciary Committee “Immigration agents are regularly prohibited from enforcing United States Immigration LAW. According to NEW POLICY, immigration agents can no longer arrest persons solely for entering the United States illegally. Officials with Immigration and Customs Enforcement have exposed agents to danger from gang members in detention centers, and that - they threatened to discipline agents for detaining illegal immigrants encountered on the street.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?…
5 – Faithfully Executed Clause. This clause is meant to ensure that a law is faithfully executed by the President, even if he disagrees with the purpose of that law. Take Care Clause to mean that the President has no inherent constitutional authority to suspend the enforcement of the laws, particularly of statutes. The Take Care Clause demands that the President obey the law, the Supreme Court said in Humphrey’s Executor v. United States, and repudiates any notion that he may dispense with the law’s execution.
Arpaio is doing his job!
The ONLY time politics should come into play for an elected law enforcement official is during a campaign, otherwise the law should be equally applied and enforced WITHOUT politically-motivated selective enforcement.
sgsmith – because it is elected, and specifically for, some decisions will and have to be political, especially the priorities to the community they serve. Same thing for County/State Attorneys.
These positions are specifically elected because of careful and time tested constitutional foundations.

Sheriff Joe is a disgusting racist pig who could only get elected in a cauldron of idiocy and white privilege such as Maricopa County.
Corruption is corruption, no matter whether a “D” or an “R” comes after your name. Not only should he be thrown out of office, he should be thrown into one of his own jails and forced to wear that pink underwear that he’s so fond of seeing on other inmates.
Would you think the same of someone that refuses to enforce the law?
Very few people have sufficient knowledge to sit down and discuss the actual impact of illegal immigration, how and why it happens, and what can realistically be done about it. And if you can’t, mostly you just sound like jack trying to keep out the boat that came in behind him.

@Stan, you know that Obama’s claim of being tough on immigration is as insincere as his claims on the percentage of the nation’s unemployment index.
There are sanctuary cities, only two of the hundreds of those illegal children from the “surge” have been deported. Illegals get in state tuition for college, Illegals get driver’s licenses in California.
We either have a country, or we don’t. Why is only Mexico and Israel allowed to have walls and enforce their immigration laws?
I like Joe!! However, inasmuch as I am a Pima County resident, I cannot vote for him. but I support his approach to law enforcement. Perhaps he could give classes to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department; starting at the top
