About 600 protesters waving familiar posters gathered in front of Pima County’s Administration Building on Tuesday evening: Refugees Welcome, Black Lives Matter, No Human is Illegal. In an age where almost every week, people take to the streets to voice their outrage with the government, people are getting creative. “Dumbledore’s Army accepting members” and “Ctrl+Alt+Delete” are a few of the more creative signs.

The focus of Tucsonans Against Racism Protest and Rally was County Supervisor Ally Miller, who announced her white pride on Facebook, only hours after a white supremacist mowed down a crowd of protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Aug. 12. For the last week, citizens and fellow board members implored her to apologize for her comments.

And now it seems the time for apologies has passed, at least for the hundreds that gathered on Tucson’s downtown. People want her gone. It was no accident this rally was planned on the day Trump addressed supporters in Phoenix. Inside the Phoenix Convention Center, Trump hinted at pardoning former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio for illegally continuing racist practices, and Trump decried the “very dishonest media,” blaming them for the backlash to his “many sides” statement following Charlottesville. Outside, thousands protested and were finally dispersed when police set off tear gas into the crowd. In Tucson, people chanted—families with toddlers in strollers, old ladies waving American flags, teenagers standing up for their future.

People of every age, creed and color shouted, “This is what democracy looks like,” and held their signs high as cars passed, honking their approval.

  1. Ally Miller simply expressed pride in her racial heritage. Only white people are forbidden to do this. A timely reminder “anti-racist” just means anti-white.

  2. It is in this near perfect state of perpetual aggrievement that Miller gives voice to a faction of America that also feels aggrieved. She whines in a way that makes the weak feel less vulnerable and more vicious. She makes feeling sorry for herself feel like fighting back.

  3. Limiting immigration is not the equivalent of racism. In fact, we limit it already; just not as much as we should.

  4. If you don’t think or speak like the liberal snowflakes then you are a bigot, racist, Nazi, white supremacist or whatever else is the rally cry for the day. It appears that free speech may be a thing from the past, I mean seriously they wanna stop hate speech whatever that is, I agree many, many groups say and do terrible things but its our GOD given right that the government agreed with that we can say what we want or think no matter how bad or even evil it is. The constitution protects idiots that say these things. Who will judge what hate speech is? Many say it doesn’t affect me but what happens when the day comes that it does affect you? NEWSFLASH it will be too late, once our rights get chipped away at slowly but surely it will affect all. What has happened to my country, no OUR country? Both the right and left are responsible for this, violence and hatred on both sides need to stop now. Exchanging thoughts and ideas are the way our country has worked for a long time; debate is how we solve problems like this. To not allow someone to speak is the worse form of oppression imaginable.
Does anyone really wanna live in a world where the “thought police” monitor and either allow or disallow how we think or what we say? Once this is allowed it will go on until we will no longer live in a free society so if that is what is wanted they are well on their way to achieving that goal unless we all say NO! 🙁
    MIKLO

  5. Hey Ronga:

Actually, if you don’t think or speak like the conservative asshats such as yourself then you are intelligent.

    You are oh so wRonga!

  6. Ally Miller did NOT “simply express pride in her racial heritage,” as if there were no context accompanying her statement. Nathan K’s post is the usual racially-motivated obfuscation, and disingenuous at best.

Immediately after a bunch of heavily armed, fascist white people ran amok in Charlottesville, terrorizing an entire community and murdering a young woman, Miller took to the airwaves to crow that white people had nothing to apologize for.

Apart from being one of the most politically inept and breathtakingly tone deaf actions I’ve ever seen a local politician take, her statement is offensive on many levels. While everyone else was making statements denouncing the evil of the dangerous, virulent white supremacy that was on display in Charlottesville, she stubbornly took the opposite tack, in essence refusing to even acknowledge–let alone take any responsibility for–the damage that white supremacy has done and is doing to our nation and its people.

We are ALL responsible for racism, and it will only be overcome if everyone admits that it still poisons our nation and its institutions at all levels, discusses it openly and constructively, and speaks out against it wherever it rears its genocidal head. The solution to racism is, and always has been, for communities to say “Not here,” and white people to say “Not in my name.”

Ally Miller’s incendiary, half-wit statement is the exact opposite of the solution, which makes her part of the problem.

    MILLER MUST GO!

  7. Skinnyman, will you join me in also unequivocally condemning AntiFa, which instigated the violence in Charlottesville, and which regularly uses violence to silence the free speech of conservatives?
