The Arizona Senate voted 17-12 to advance a bill that prohibits women from buying health insurance coverage that covers abortion via the federal insurance marketplace established by the Affordable Care Act.

The legislation, which I wrote about in this week’s Skinny, was amended to allow women to purchase policies that cover abortion in cases of rape and incest.

But SB 1318 blocks women from obtaining abortion coverage even if they pay extra for the policy on the assumption that the underlying policy is subsidized by the federal government, so even if the cost of the additional abortion coverage is covered by the woman who wants to purchase the policy, women are somehow enjoying a taxpayer subsidy if they choose to terminate their pregnancy.

The bill now moves the Arizona House of Representatives.

  1. Wait, I thought we sent troops to Afghanistan to help protect women from old men who wanted to control every aspect of their lives. Do we need Federal troops up in Phoenix?

  2. We did and we do. Or at least men in white coats with the special “hug yourself” jackets for the Legislature.

  4. Abortions should be free and legal. Birth control should be free and legal. Euthanasia should be free and legal.

  5. I do not like Ducey but he did say something that I have thought for years. He told the churches to step forward and start helping with these 1000s of children who have been abused, neglected and need help. He said you are the ones who stand against birth control and abortion. Now step up and help. I find this spot on in so many ways. For me I never had to decide whether I was for or against abortion and birth control. It was decided for me as I watched the same people who are against them lobby, protest, and yell to close Planned Parenthood. 2% of what they do is abortion. The rest is primarily counseling on all the choices we have to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Yet these groups protest them. I see social services that help children from fostering to child protective services extremely underfunded and ignored. I see schools maligned and underfunded. Do I think Ducey’s answer is the right one? No …. I think every person who truly loves children should decide whether they are ready to have them or not for they are a huge responsibility. THey can’t have it both ways. Ducey at least pointed that out.

    Bring back the death penalty. Chances are, they are far more deserving of it.

  7. Rat T you are woefully uninformed. When Democrats are in power and Planned Parenthood is fully funded, there are far far fewer abortions. Planned Parenthood’s primary goal is to prevent unwanted pregnancies. President Obama cannot do it alone. By wanting Planned Parenthood not funded, you are creating more abortions because people get desperate.
