Martha McSally is crushing her GOP challengers in the U.S. Senate Republican primary

They say that “almost” only counts in horseshoes or hand grenades, but today, Congresswoman Martha McSally (R-AZ02) tried to add lawmaking to those exceptions.

After her hardline immigration bill gathered only 193 votes, Team McSally sent out a press release crowing: “McSally Legislation to Secure Southern Border Nearly Receives Votes Needed to Pass House.”

Last we checked, that doesn’t fall in the win column—although it does help McSally politically as she continues her flight into hard-right conservatism as she runs for U.S. Senate.

Anyhoo, here’s McSally’s canned quote:

I’ve been working tirelessly on this bill since September of last year and it’s unfortunate it fell short today because it represents an important step to keeping our country safe. As a representative of border communities in Southern Arizona, I have witnessed first-hand the security threats we face and the dysfunction of our immigration system. The provisions contained in this bill are thoughtful solutions to solve the serious issues that continue to impact communities in Arizona and the rest of the country. Like many pieces of legislation, this bill was not perfect and certain improvements that had been made over the last six months were left out. This large vote total represents a huge victory for those of us who believe the border must be secured and I remain ready to lead and help deliver legislation to the President’s desk that he can sign into law.

McSally’s bill was never expected to pass because of cuts to legal immigration and other elements, reports The Hill:

House leadership had expressed pessimism on the chances for either Goodlatte’s legislation or a second compromise bill written with centrists, both of which come as the growing crisis at the border dominated headlines.

The hardline measure faced sharp pushback from both Democrats and moderates, who took issue with a number of provisions including its cuts to legal immigration.

Meanwhile, that compromise bill also doesn’t have the votes to pass, so House Speaker Paul Ryan has delayed the vote until next week. Hey, why not? It might give lawmakers a chance to actually read the legislation before they vote on it.

  2. The fact that 83% of the GOP caucus supported mandatory e-Verify and an end to chain migration is a great thing. McSally is rightfully proud of her contributions to the Goodlatte bill. It was a good bill that accurately reflected the concerns of most Americans, who want and end to illegal immigration and 21st century reform of our legal immigration system. Hopefully some of McSally’s ideas make into the compromise bill.

    There are reasons the powers-to-be frown upon critical thinking, education and a free press. When telling and selling lies is the way to garner, maintain and hold onto power and wealth the truth cannot be allowed to stand; However, for those who seek the truth the secret is simple — follow the money.

  7. Borders Have A Purpose has it right. The Democrats have figured out the best way to hack our democracy: simply replace the traditional American nation with a new population of more easily led voters. Since traditional Americans don’t elect Democrats, the Democrats will just elect a new people. I worry about the future the Democrats have planned for our children and grandchildren. I imagine that it will look something like Brazil or South Africa.

    While I am strongly supportive of Peabo’s, ahem, “talking point”, here is some actual information that blows the idiot racists out of the water.

    As reported in today’s Washington Post, a Gallup poll published just yesterday indicated only 29 percent support for reducing immigration into the U.S., while 75 percent think “immigration is a good thing for the U.S.”, which is a new record high. When asked specifically about “legal” immigration, 84 percent said it’s a good thing.

    And a CBS News Poll last month showed that only 38 percent of people in this country support the idiotic border wall that was a centerpiece of the Goodlatte bill.

    So, DrowsySaxon and the rest of the haters, please crawl back under your rocks and go back to sleep. Your neanderthal views are outdated, morally indefensible, and DEAD WRONG.

  13. McSally’s optimistic statements were more realistic than all the headlines that called a 7-2 vote by the Supreme Court a “narrow decision” in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case.

  18. And yet this District voted ,not once, but twice, for this woman. I’d like to know how MCSally worked “tirelessly” for anything in the 4 years she has been in Congress given that they have a recess almost every month and work less than even part time Americans. The Republican party has some nerve castigating hard working immigrants who work their ass off; when they have produced exactly one piece of legislation in the past 525 days (tax breaks for the very rich) and have worked “tirelessly” to destroy health care, medicare, medicaid, public education, and a host of other things that Americans want or need for basic survival. Those of us who live here in Southern Arizona should be ashamed that we are the ones who may be responsible for giving Arizona this redneck, right wing Trumpite to be our next senator. I hang my head in sorrow , especially when I consider that when McCain, a true American hero, may be replaced with someone who couldn’t even fill his shadow should she become a Senator.

    Moreover, previous polls have found very strong support for the other elements of the Goodlatte bill, such as mandatory e-verify, and a merit, rather than family, based legal immigration system.
