According to Sen. Lindsey Graham, pregnant women are running across the border and over the river to give birth.
It’s apparent that the South Carolina Republican has never been pregnant, and should do his homework.
In Tucson, it’s wealthy Mexican woman who cross the border, with a visa, to give birth at programs that market specifically to them. The morning daily wrote about the issue last year, specifically a marketing campaign at Tucson Medical Center that charges $2,300 for a vaginal birth and two-day stay, and $4,600 for a C-section—with a massage for mom and U.S. citizenship for the baby.
“This is not a new phenomena,” Mexico’s Consul General in Tucson, Juan Manuel Calderón Jaimes, was quoted as saying. “Many families of means in Sonora send their wives here to give birth because they have the resources to pay for the services.”
Keep it up. A recent article in The Atlantic points out that more of this 14th Amendment talk could lead to the GOP losing more Hispanic voters. Read the article here:
What they should fear is the wrath of Hispanic voters. The largest minority population in the country, Hispanics are also the fastest-growing. Polls show 4 in 5 Hispanic voters favor birthright citizenship, while Republicans largely oppose the idea. And Hispanics are quickly turning on the GOP for the party’s perceived anti-immigrant rhetoric.
After comprehensive immigration reform efforts broke down during George W. Bush’s second term, Hispanics began what could be an inexorable slide toward a permanent, and prominent, place in the Democratic coalition. Bush won 44 percent of the Hispanic vote in 2004; fewer than 1 in 3 Hispanics voted for McCain in 2008. Around the country, downballot Republicans performed even worse.
This article appears in Aug 5-11, 2010.

Like our own John McCain, Lindsey Graham is not very popular with the Tea Party types who dominate the Republican base in his state. Graham knows that changing the US Constitution is a long, difficult process. This proposal is just a way for Graham to pander to the South Carolina bigots in order to offset their anger over his singular Republican Senate Judicial Committee votes for both of Obama’s nominees to SCOTUS. Of course McCain and Kyl have jumped on the bandwagon with him, though McCain subsequently backed off slightly. Someone in his campaign must have reminded the increasingly befuddled McCain that mobilizing the Hispanic vote against him even more with this additional racist nonsense might just do him in. We can only hope.
It isn’t just the wealthy pregnant Mexican women who are crossing the border. One of the networks had a special report years ago on the women who cross the border at the last minute, give birth in one of the San Diego hospitals, declare themselves indigent, then leave without paying one penny, costing the hospitals millions. And now the family has an American member. Isn’t that wonderful.
Oh yes, yes, AZRLS we all know white women are never indigent. A white woman would never give birth if she was poor. Oh wait, except for this fine specimen:

I wish you folks wouldn’t be such pussies and just come out and say it. You hate brown people, and you most certainly hate the “negros”. Just come out, free yourself. You hate brown people unless they are your servants. The truth will set you free, go for it!
It’s the cost that’s bugging you? Really? Bush left the country on the brink or recession, billions of your white dollars to bail out Wall Street. You can pay for the birth of a hundred babies for the cost of tax payer funded uranium-tipped ammo. I suppose that ammo goes to kill brown people elsewhere, so we’re cool with that. How is it that an indigent birth in San Diego seems to adversely effect you and not me? Fiscal magic? The cost argument is bullshit and you know it.
Free yourself! Say it out loud with me, I HATE BROWN PEOPLE! You can replace brown with Mexican if your hatred is more specific. Or if you’re a fan of Snookie.
Just remember these motivational words from a Tea Party leader. “When the US reaches 30% Hispanic, it will no longer be America.”
Peace sisters!
The subject was, and is, pregnant Mexican women who cross the border to have an anchor baby in the San Diego hospitals, declare themselves indigent, and return home, costing the border hospitals millions of dollars. That ought to bother everyone.
It has zero to do with indigent people in this country, or race.
