No, the Tea Party Patriots didn’t exactly call Obama Hitler in the top image, which I found on the group’s Facebook page. But when I looked at the graphic with a cut-off image of an iron Caduceus, a symbol connected with medicine, I immediately associated it with Nazi symbolism. The way that isolated wing hovers above a circle with a cross inside it tilted to one side looked familiar. Sure enough, the iron eagle perched on a swastika (at nearly the same angle as the cross) in a circle is a ubiquitous symbol of the Third Reich. No way the similarity is coincidental.

Evoking the image of Obama as Hitler “TRYING TO CONTROL YOUR LIFE!” and having “What are you talking about? It’s just a picture of a Caduceus!” deniability. I have to compliment — reluctantly — the graphic artist who created the image and the TPP’s evolution into a sophisticated propaganda organization. They’ve come a long way from the days when they drew crude Hitler mustaches on Obama.

    Perhaps it is more than your over-active imagination that elicited this comparison, but rather a realization that there is something to what the Tea Party and other conservative groups are saying. However I, for one, see a much greater parallel with Stalin and Obama than I do with Hitler and Obama.

  6. Good catch on the subversive symbolism, Mr. Safier. The TTP’s use of it says a lot about them as an organization, and a lot about their membership. Either they (ignorantly and inappropriately) find the Nazi references to be accurate, or it’s a big insider joke to them, topped by the plausible deniability you mentioned. Either one is pretty disturbing to me.

    Fortunately, there is nobody in the US today that can be compared to Hitler. That kind of comparison, like trivial comparisons to the Holocaust, are strikingly ridiculous in the face of the enormity of the crimes committed against humanity by Hitler and his Nazi regime.

    FYI, the symbolism reminded me of ‘Godwin’s Law’, that is: “As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1”.

  9. Fraser, National Socialist was the name of the org before Hitler removed or killed all it’s original leaders. He then turned it into a far right political org. You see, it’s much easier to co-opt an existing political party than actually building one from scratch. Read some history before commenting on it.

    The Tea Party (mostly made up of Libertarians, or usurped by Libertarians, and other Way.. Way. ouer fringted Far Right sociapaths), have for years used the same tactics that Hitler used to take over the National Socialist Party, morph it’s concepts into a deadly combination of National Pride, and Patriotism, and dragged a great nation down the path of destruction.

    The only view of history and patriotism that today’s Tea Party has, is that “Divide and Conquer” still has some merit.

    God Bless America, for it is only in this great nation that these radicals can say what they say, and be protected by our cvonstitution, in the same way the American Nationial Socialist Party, the skinheads, and other wacko groups can speak their mind, and stay out of prison.

    They are the greatest threat this nation has faced since the American Civil War.

    Wake up America.
