The folks at the Meet Rack–by far one of the most interesting dive bars in Tucson, if not the world–removed the semi-famous sign that stood in front of the bar earlier today.
Meet Rack owner/former mayoral candidate Jim Anderson–aka God–was present for the removal, hugging the sign at one point before it was yanked down.
Meet Rack employee Leora Thompson said the city of Tucson was forcing the Meet Rack to take down the sign, which has been up, she said, since 1959.
Here are some photos of the sign, taken by Adam Kurtz, before it (the sign, not Adam) was yanked down.
Coming soon: A video report (!) from Jim Nintzel, showing the sign’s demolition and featuring reaction from God.

No word on why the city made a 50-year old sign come down?
JB,
Why was the city forcing the Meet Rack to take down the sign if it had been up since 1959?
Damn it all — I was there just last night. I didn’t hear any warnings at the bar that it was coming down today.
.
I’ll kind of miss that sign.
.
I suspect the reason the sign is getting taken down is because of how close it is in contrast to the street. That’s what I would suspect, without knowing. Someone call the city!
Word will be coming.
How sad. The sign’s weirdness always made me smile. I hope they find another way to display it.
Did I hear that the sign at Jerry’s Lee Ho market was taken down last week? The Tucson Weekly offices were just up the road from that place. Anyone snap any photos? A sad time for vintage signs.
